My ferrets are about a year and a half old and have eaten raw chicken and organs before. I just starting introducing new things. Yesterday was heart and my boy Callisto started acting like he was going to vomit after he ate but he never actually did. Today I fed them bone in chicken wings, (they've had chicken but never bone before) he ate a little bit and then ran under a blanket and vomited a little bit of white, foamy saliva stuff. He's otherwise acting normal playing and looking in his bowl for more food, which I removed already. What should I do? Discontinue the new feedings? Take him to the vet? --Could this be stress related? He is starting a newish diet and I just switched him to a different cage yesterday...

I'd say he choked on something. Did he crack the bone? Or it could have been a piece of tendon or cartilage. I don't feed whole raw but I've seen choking.

I was concerned about one of them choking on a bone when I gave it to them. I broke it in half so they would know the yummy marrow was inside. He didn't bite it, probably because it was so unfamiliar to him but I guess it's possible that it poked him in the throat or something.

Is he ONLY doing this right after eating? And if I read correctly he's doing it with both heart AND wing?

Yes, only right after eating and with heart and bone in chicken. Except he only seemed to gag a little after the heart but actually puked after the chicken. Last night I gave him a bowl of familiar food, boneless chicken and liver, and he ate and acted normally.

It sounds like he might have been eating a little too fast then As he gains practice he'll learn how to chew pieces off correctly.

Ok, thanks for the reassurance. He's still acting fine so I'm not too worried anymore. Hope he learns quickly!

He will- until he finds something he lives more than life itself For my Boris that was beef heart. He could NOT inhale that stuff fast enough, puke it all back up, and start again ::yuck:: I finally had to start slivering it for him

I just tried to give another feeding of heart and he did the same thing. He definitely doesn't like it as much as he likes chicken and seems reluctant to eat which is why I don't understand why he refuses to chew! He threw up whole pieces again. Guess I'll have to try cutting up tiny, don't know what else I can do.

I do mix it. That's really the only way he'll even touch it. Guess he's just got to get use to it. I cut it up a little bit really tiny and he didn't seem to have any troubles swallowing it. I think I'll just do that from now on when it comes to hearts, I think it'll work.

Okay, sounds good It's likely really rich for him, so it is going to take a while for him to get used to it.
