I bought a big bale of Peat Moss to use for a dig box for MoJo. I remember reading in a post somewhere about baking it for an hour or so to get rid of any lingering bacteria, etc?
Should I bake it? If so, in what and for how long?

I didn't bother baking mine and they have been fine. I take my fuzz outside all of the time for walks and such and they dig around in the dirt outside. The way I look at it, it's no different.

I was hoping I'd get that answer, haha! I wanted to avoid waiting for it to bake, impatient as I am MoJo goes outside, as well, so I was wondering how different it is! Thanks! ;D

Thanks! ;D Meh some people may disagree with me. But you know what? I have had the peat moss dig box for over a month now and no problems thus far. They are, IMO, much more likely to pick something up outside. lol

I very much agree with you, I'd think they were much more likely to pick something up from outside

Was it expensive? I'd like to pick some up. Where'd you buy it?

I got a GINORMO ("medium") bale of organic Peat moss at Home Depot for about $30. They supposedly have smaller ones normally but they were all out.

Same! I got mine from home depot....it's a HUGE bale. I only ended up paying about $10 for it!
But it is REALLY dusty???!!! I'm going to try a spray bottle. MoJo was sneezing so bad, all he wanted was OUT of it. But I can tell he really loved digging in it, it was just too dusty!
Any other suggestions?

The only thing to watch for, and I've no idea if they put it into peat moss or not, are the styrofoam chips in many planting soils(which include peat moss in the mix) meant to hold water for the plants. Otherwise, it should be good as is

I asked tons of questions and made sure there's nothing added into it. I've looked threw what I put in his dig box and everything looks okay....other than the dustiness!! Thanks for the tip

I mixed mine with a little play sand. I haven't had too much of an issue with dust. I do find that they enjoy it more dampened down though. And the great thing is that unlike true dirt, it doesn't turn into mud. So you can get it all kinds of wet and muddy...and when it dries it is SO easy to vacuum right up! ;D
Sherry, there are some tiny foam bits in the moss that I got, but they have (thankfully) shown zero interest in eating them. The dig box is purely for digging! (Finally Something! *knocks on wood*) It's just a very small amount as well.
