haha There are shortcuts to those but I never remember them. ss is a good English alphabet substitute for essen by my understanding.
Engel that is a very good point. I have tired talking a little German with some friends before, but I learned a different dialect. And I am sure you have seen how defensive the Germans are of their dialect... ;D I know I sure had a few experiences with that! I got corrected a lot even though I know for a fact that I Was pronouncing it right as per the dialect(s) I learned it in. It didn't really help my self confidence as well as being frustrating so, you know... *shrugs*
