I usually sprinkle some baking soda in the bottom of the litter boxes to keep the odor down (despite scooping them out at least once a day). I guess I put in a little too much this time, because I walk in, right after cleaning the boxes and Pita is ROLLING in them and sticking her face in the litter. Then she pops out sneezing her fool head off and pawing at her face. I pull her out and realize she tried to eat the baking soda Months of doing this and TODAY she decides she wants a tastes. I ran water in my hand and cleaned her face off, and apparently the water was enough to clean out her mouth too. And of course, after all this she looks at me like "what? I was curious". I added more litter and put her back in the cage. She pees and then goes to bed. Goes I won't be putting baking soda in there any more.

They are so weird sometimes. Baking soda is not harmful really as long as she only had a small amount. It is an antacid and kind of salty tasting so perhaps that is why she like it so much.

I don't think she had much all. I think it was the salty taste that made her gag. I don't think it ever occurred to her to dig in the litter box before.

I usually add the baking soda to the bottom and make sure there's dirty litter on top.

what you could do is layer baking soda then like a layer of newspaper then my litter, it helps them from slipping in the litter as well

Oh this reminds me of Bonkers. He loves to roll around in the clean litter, but the one time I tried baking soda...he wouldn't step foot into the litter Riley was afraid of it after it made her sneeze... I never thought to put baking soda in before the litter! I will definitely try that.
