1. Where did you first learn about natural diets for ferrets?
internet
2. Please describe the type of diet you would like assistance in switching your ferret(s) to. Be sure to include if you are interested in feeding whole prey (live or frozen-thawed) and if you are wanting to FULLY switch to a natural diet or PARTIALLY. If you are unsure what kind of diet you want to put your ferrets on, please express that and we can help you find the best type of natural diet for your ferret.
I'd like to feed kibble in the morning and raw at night at least until i get the hang of it and can make a more informed decision
3. Why are you interested in switching your ferrets to a natural diet?
Achilles has been sick. He got really under weight and in an effort to get him to eat I gave him chicken wings. He loved them. The vet said if he would eat it that it would be beneficial to supplement his diet with raw.
4. Do you understand that switching your ferret to a natural diet can be a lengthy, arduous process? Its not an overnight switch. It can be a commitment of several weeks or even months. Your HF Mentor will be more then happy to assist you in switchng your ferret(s) to a natural diet, but you need to be equally as commited. If you aren't willing to tough out a potentially lengthy switching process, or if you have major life changes approaching (baby on the way, moving, starting school, getting married/divorced, etc) then it might be a better idea to wait on switching your ferret's diet until you have more time. Are you willing to make the commitment?
I don't really see it as more of a commitment than I've already made. It actually strikes me as both a learning experience and a convenience. I hate driving all the way across town to the pet food store might as well get his meals where I get mine and if I learn to butcher meat in the process that's a skill that can only serve me well for the rest of my life. I don't seem to have a picky ferret. show him its food and he eats it. That's not to say I'm unwilling to backtrack if he proves resistant to meats other than chicken
5. How many ferrets do you currently have? What are their names? Ages? Genders? Do they have any health problems? Are they overweight? Underweight? How long have you had each ferret for?
I have 1 ferret. Achilles. He's between 6-8. I've always assumed he's male. He is currently underweight. I've had him for about 6 years.
6. What diet do you currently feed your ferrets? (Please include all treats, supplements, etc)
He used to eat Marshall's ferret or Totally ferret. I swapped between the two occasionally trying other brands. His diet has been all over the place in the last year. The vet said he should be eating a high end cat food. So for a while he ate viand which i got from her but at that time i was going to 4 stores to feed 5 pets and couldn't keep it up so he started to get what the cats were eating. then it was recalled. we switched 3-4 times because the cats were so picky. He also received some Marshall ferret food intermittenly. When he became sick he only wanted dog food. Since his illness he's been eating a mix of chicken wings, canned A/D and cat food.
7. Have you ever tried to switch your ferrets to a natural diet in the past? If yes, what happened?
I've always given him chicken when he's sick but that's as close as I've gotten.
8. What additional information about yourself or your ferrets would you like to share?
9. How often during the week do you have access to a computer?
Daily
10. Please post a picture of each of your ferrets (if possible).
11. Have you met the requirements for this program? Do you have your scale, a place to access meats, hearts, livers, etc?
Our grocery store stocks hearts, livers and a variety of meats. I haven't checked if they sell kidneys or other organ meats separately. Scales are easy enough to come by.
