1. Where did you first learn about natural diets for ferrets?
I learned about them on the American Ferret Association facebook page.
2. Please describe the type of diet you would like assistance in switching your ferret(s) to. Be sure to include if you are interested in feeding whole prey (live or frozen-thawed) and if you are wanting to FULLY switch to a natural diet or PARTIALLY. If you are unsure what kind of diet you want to put your ferrets on, please express that and we can help you find the best type of natural diet for your ferret.
I would like my ferrets to switch from kibble (Wysong and Dr. Foster and Smith) to raw frozen. I am not sure if I would like to completely switch them, because I am nervous, but ultimately, that is what would be the best for them.
3. Why are you interested in switching your ferrets to a natural diet?
I do not want my babies to develop issues in their life that could have been avoided if fed something better.
4. Do you understand that switching your ferret to a natural diet can be a lengthy, arduous process? Its not an overnight switch. It can be a commitment of several weeks or even months. Your HF Mentor will be more then happy to assist you in switchng your ferret(s) to a natural diet, but you need to be equally as commited. If you aren't willing to tough out a potentially lengthy switching process, or if you have major life changes approaching (baby on the way, moving, starting school, getting married/divorced, etc) then it might be a better idea to wait on switching your ferret's diet until you have more time. Are you willing to make the commitment?
Yey, I am 100% ready.
5. How many ferrets do you currently have? What are their names? Ages? Genders? Do they have any health problems? Are they overweight? Underweight? How long have you had each ferret for?
I have 7...
Zeus - Male, 1 year, 2 months. He is normal weight. About 2.5lbs. Had him since he was 12 weeks old.
Athena - Female, 1 year, 2 months old. About 2 lbs. Had since she was 12 weeks old.
Apollo - Male, 11 months old. About 3.2 lbs. Had since he was 12 weeks old.
Archimedes - Male, 9 months old, about 3.5lbs. Had since 12 weeks old.
Pharoah - Male, About 2 years old. Had since he was 1.5 yeard old. About 2.3 lbs.
Artemis Mae - Female - 12 weeks old. 1 lb. Had since 8 weeks old.
Hermes - Male 12 weeks old. 1 lb finally. Had since 8 weeks old.
6. What diet do you currently feed your ferrets? (Please include all treats, supplements, etc)
I feed Wysong Ferret Epigen 90, and Dr Foster and Smith kibble, and they get those both ground up daily with Zupreen no corn as soup, and I add chicken or turkey baby food as well as Nupro Supplement. Every other batch, I use egg yolks as well.
7. Have you ever tried to switch your ferrets to a natural diet in the past? If yes, what happened?
The babies eat Bravo Basics rabbit frozen raw, as well as vital essentials kitty cups frozen raw. But I don't know how to stop feeding them the marshall wysong mix they came home eating.... My adults, I have tried feeding them from the vital essentials kitty cups as well. Athena and Zeus ate it if I coated it with ferrettone. But, they won't eat them plain. I don't think they'll even eat them anymore. It's been a month since I have tried. The other 3, I've rubbed a little on their gums, but they act like they're poisoned. Hahaha
8. What additional information about yourself or your ferrets would you like to share?
Hermes has been sick since we rescued him. Je is on amoxicillin and metronidazole... As well as pepto. He came ohome and began vomitting, got very listless, and lost a lot of weight. We had him to the vet, and his BG was 80 after eating just a few licks of marshalls. He has no parasites, and an ok x ray. No blockages. His poop has been grainy diarrhea since we got him. He went back to the vet a week after the 1st visit. He still was not eating much, so he weighed just under a pound. He lost a tiny bit. But still had a clear x ray and had his complete blood panel done. His ALT liver enzyme was greater than 415, but that was most likely from not eating. Since then, he's gained weight, not listless anymore, and I've added a probiotic to his raw food or carnivore care. He has put on weight and now just today, his poop isn't grainy, but is still a little runny. Less than it ever has been though!
9. How often during the week do you have access to a computer?
Daily
10. Please post a picture of each of your ferrets (if possible).
Okay.
11. Have you met the requirements for this program? Do you have your scale, a place to access meats, hearts, livers, etc?
I have access to all of those things, but I will have to get a scale.
