I've been debating about enrolling all 4 kids in some sort of insurance program... Jack's $1200 surgery in October was probably the catalyst for these searches, hahaha. In my search I found this company www.petassure.com/currentplans.aspx?affiliateid=8875 who seems to do things a bit differently. For $16 a month, I can enroll both cats and both ferrets! But it's kind of like buying a membership to SAM's Club. You get an upfront discount at your Vet's office of 25 % for their services - check-ups, elective procedures (dental cleanings) and vaccinations are included as well as surgeries. Jack's last check-up, which included two xrays was over $150, and the discount on that visit alone would have paid for over half the "premium." My vet is not in the network yet, but I have referred them and hopefully soon she will be! If any of your vets are already in the network, this may be a good alternative to the few ferret insurance options out there!

Very interesting! Thanks for posting this - I'll have to check and see if my vets in the network.

I'm considering VIP pet insurance. It's $120 a year per pet, which is kinda pricey, but it seems to cover quite a lot of services. the petassure 25% off is a lot of a discount, but if one of mine needed surgery ($1000+) the price would still be high with the discount

I believe with VPI, they DO NOT cover any endocrine problems, ie no adrenal coverage

I, also, have been thinking about insurance for my boys! I looked into Care Credit, and while it seems decent, i try and stay away from "credit cards". Im definitely going to look in to the insurance more....thanks for posting this

Not everyone is approved for carecredit, so relying on it can be risky.

I was reading the site/reviews about it and noticed that! If I DO decide to do it, I would apply *hopefully* before I needed it, that way I would already have the coverage. The one thing that bothers me about it, is the vet I use isn't on there. I know there is the "referral" option, but that's really a hit or miss!

I did use Care Credit when Paulie went in for his emergency surgery that turned out to be a horrible case of enteritis, not blockage as originally thought. It was a lifesaver and the promo rates were perfect to make sure I paid it off when I could afford it. The nice thing is that if you have your own medical/dental/vision problems come up, the card is good for that too and the promos still apply. (Under 500 no interest for six months, over no interest 12 months I think?). It can't always cover everything, but it can help with some emergencies. Don't do what I did and have to apply for it during the emergency (that was bad timing for me all around--couldn't find a job then Paulie's IBD reared its ugly head for what it was, manifesting as a blockage).
Also, with VIP endocrine problems also include insulinomas to them. So, you are only really covered for things like blockage (which for some ferrets is a necessity) and lymphoma. I checked into it after Paulie's surgery. :/

Weird I think VPI used to reimburse me for insulinoma blood glucose tests?

Hmm, I found the wording interesting. It could have been surgeries?
B/c blood glucose readings can also be preventative? Maybe it has changed since I considered getting it.

I pay $10 a month for Sonny's health insurance with VPI. I signed him up in November. So far I have paid $60 in premiums. A few weekday ago, Sonny bit the ears off of two small ceramic rabbits and i freaked -took him to the vet. It was well publicized in another thread... The vet bill was $255. I submitted the bill to VPI on 4/19/11. I received the reimbursement check in the mail today. I was refunded $184.50 (I have s $50 deductible). So, is it worth it? Yes! Worth every penny. It has already paid for itself and then some.
