My newest baby Godiva, has thinning hair on her tail... She's been with me now for just a tad over 2 weeks. Upon comming home she did have fleas, those are gone now, thankgoodness! By looking at her teeth she's about 2-3 years old, so not too young to be adrenal, but I'm thinking that her fur loss is more along the lines of poor nutrition and flea infestation. When a closer look is taken there are black dots, almost like black heads on her tale, she's a dark sable so that could be fur regrowth? Maybe? How long does it take for fur to grow back? If it is black heads how do I treat them? She's switched over to raw and has started eating bone in meats, which is AWESOME!

What I did when Pixie had blackheads was scrub her tail gently with a soft tooth brush with some dawn dish soap. You can use a natural cleanser as well. I did this every 4 days to every week. The hair started coming back slowly, but I didn't see a big difference until the weather got cooler and she switched to raw.
It could definitely be hair regrowth too. Is the fur on her tail extra oily? Also, where is the thinning happening exactly on her tail?

I've found the one advantage of rat tail(rat tail on a ferret will generally start at the tip, and go up the tail, and on the bottom side) is the fact it will come back next shed, even if it's not bothered with. Most will clean it with an astringent soap(you want benzoyl peroxide, not acetasyllic acid), and rinse well. Just like treating blackheads on your own face

Her fur all over is kind of thin, especially compared to my crew that have been on raw and have their winter fluff. Godiva she has very little undercoat and her topcoat is very brittle and rough feeling. The fur loss is all over her tail it's pretty consistant, there are no patches that are worse. It doesn't feel like her tail is oily either. She also has no tatoo's, so I highly doubt that she's a Marshall's, but is very small in stature and is probably only about 10 inches from nose to butt...maybe 13-14 inches total.

Give her a while on a good diet, see how she does. At the same time, I'd be watching her for signs of adrenal, unfortunately. Sinnead's tail is now totally naked, and is not oily at all. Her fur is also thinning, and not at it's best, but she's got her vet appt. set for mid next month to see about having her lupron upped.

I know, not really wanting it to be adrenal, hoping it's just the fleas and diet.... Godiva is such a sweetheart too, up pick her up and she's giving you kisses all over your face, hasn't been submissive or dominant when I introduced her to the rest of the group, just kind of joined right in like she belonged.... so far I haven't seen any grooming or agressiveness... I'll keep an eye on her nether regions to make sure there's no swelling. Is there anything else that I should be looking for adrenal wise?

When she's playing, mounting behaviour. It may just look as though she's "hopped on" for a ride Sometimes, there will be an oval shape of much thinner fur on the lower abdomen. Nipples may become larger/more noticable. Behaviour change. With Athena, she doesn't become dominant or aggressive, but actually starts becoming more timid, and startles easier.

So far so good then... I haven't noticed any of these behaviors yet, but I'll have to check out her nipples and belly. She still hasn't really figured out what a ferret is or how to be one! I heard her chuckle while running through the crinkle tube, and she'll waddle around but no war dancing or really hard core dooking yet. I'm keeping a close eye on her regardless because she was just put in with the rest of the group and I've been making sure that she's been getting enough to eat...

Good luck with her! Here's hoping it's just the diet

Keeping my fingers crossed! (and stuffing her with as much meat and tidbits as I can!)
