I've been working on litter training my youngest outside of the cage. She's perfect inside, but when they're out, she's decided that next to or in front of the litter box is preferable to actually INSIDE the litter box. When I catch in the act of backing up, I scoop her up and place her in the closest litter box. Invariably she tries to run off to her preferred spot (I can't call it a corner because sometimes it's just under a chair). We'll end up playing this cat-and-mouse (ferret and human) game of her trying to get out of the box, while I put her back in until she goes. Do you know, that just to get out, she pretends to go? She'll back up, stand there a few seconds and then try to get away real quick. She actually tries to fake me out! So obviously, she knows what she's supposed to do in the box, but she's being a stubborn teenager and wants to go where SHE wants to go.

Oh my, I have one of those fakers. Pixie does it to me ALL the time. Go in litter box, makes a funny face, then runs out. I look in box, no poop. "Pixie, go potty girl. Go potty!" Pixie proceeds back in to litter box, wondering what gave her away. She attempts again, this time, she waits longer. This will go on and on until one of us gives up (usually me )

Hehe. They're definitely smarter than most people give them credit for. I've learned to watch for the telltale squeezing of their sides; that means they're actually going and not just pretending. Funny enough, it's only my girls that only do it too!

OMG that is so funny... I do the same thing! Trixie doesn't know how to fake the potty face, so she is an instant give away. With Pixie (if the box is dirty) I watch her little sides to know its a real one or not. They are WAY to smart for their own good.

That's Bastien's trick... unfortunately, Damia is learning rapidly. Why can't she learn from Melinda (the good ferret)?

haha Koda will even move his sides so that it almost looks like he is "pushing" the invisible poop out. Little Scheming Fur ball! He is crafty! He knows just sitting in the corner in poop position won't fool me, so he fakes pooping contractions. It is very different from straining btw. It has more of an air of... *push push...JUMPANDRUN* ;D Smart little boy... I sit by the litter box and corner them in. I have become quite adept at catching them in mid air as they try to hop over me, or under me. lmao Kenai is just starting to figure out the faking it thing, but he is not very good at it. haha With Koda sometimes I almost have to check.

Hahahaha... there are such things as good ferrets. I used to have one named Smudgie. He used the litter box inside the cage 100% of the time and outside of the cage 95% of the time would jump back into his cage to go. 1 out of the 16 ferrets I have/had is not too bad.

Koda was like 100% in the cage, and 98-99% out of the cage until Kenai came along. And well, then Kenai came along. Now Koda is still convinced Kenai contaminates the out of the cage boxes and will often not use them if they smell like Kenai. And Kenai is fat and lazy and just likes to poop wherever is most convenient.

Melinda really is a "good" ferret... It's actually really funny to watch her - doesn't matter if she's in the middle of a good tussle, sound asleep or just being a speed bump, when the "urge" hits her she takes off as fast as she can for the nearest litter box. Every now and then, the first litter box she finds isn't the one she wants and she will jump in, sniff, jump out and run to another box I'm not sure how she determines which box is just right - doesn't seem to matter if it's just been cleaned, really needs cleaning or is somewhere in the middle.

Mine litter box surf too, especially Oz. He goes to most of them in a room before he can decide.
