Is it alright to microchip ferrets? I didn't know how common it is now, or if there are any possible health complications from it.

My oldest guy came with a microchip. It feels like a small Tylenol capsule between his shoulder blades. According to our vet, it's best to do it while they're anesthetized because the needle is very large. Our little boy doesn't seem to be any worse for having it.
One thing though, I don't think most people would even think to look for a microchip on a ferret. Our vet would never even have checked (and didn't even noticed the little lump) if I hadn't brought it up during his initial exam.

They can definitely be microchipped. In my opinion, it's not worth the cost. The ferret would have to be brought into a vet/shelter and scanned with the right scanner or it serves no purpose. I'm not sure if they have universal scanners/chips yet, so I'm waiting until they have a more fool proof system

Hm, that's interesting! Thanks for that. I had no idea they developed a universal system.

Yeah, I read they had, but not every place uses them still. Though, if a ferret is taken to a vet and they use a scanner that can't read the chip, they can tell there is a chip there. So maybe they would make extra effort to find a universal scanner.
I don't think I'll get my guys chips, but I will consider it.

Any ferret that has to be imported or exported has to be micro-chipped. I don't know if it's that way to transport them between Canada and the US but it's standard proceedure for into or out of any country ciao

Neither the ones I imported from Sweden in 2004 or the ones I imported from the UK last fall were microchipped.

Two of ours came chipped. The rescue chips all the ferrets that go through there. Since "found" ferrets ultimately wind up with FRES(when the finders give them up, that is), the chip will be read.

I chip ALL my ferrets. Here they do check for chip if turned into the a shelter or to a vet. I think its very important if they were to get lost. Here a found ferret turned into the shelter we scan them for a chip. Plus for the fact I show my ferrets, and if any one some how would steal one of my kids, they are chipped and I have proof of ownership. Thats unlikely though you never know. Anyhow I think its a good idea, its one jab and then it doesn't bother the ferret after. Its better to be safe then sorry. My ferrets have Avid chips, as well as Home Again. All the good private bred ferrets all come microchipped too. Thats whats nice when I got my private bred kits, didn't have to worry about getting that done Seems like the breeders typically use Avid.

I was checking into getting a ferret imported last year, and they all required microchip. Maybe it depends on the air line? I dunno. But I was told from all airlines they need it.

I believe the only breeder that microchips is GFX's. Kerry may of when she was breeding. Most of them didn't.

It was part of the import agreement for imports/exports into Canada, and I noticed that it was on a couple of the airline transportation manifests for both Canada and the US. You must have lucked out Joan ciao
