Hey everyone, My name is Steph and I'm not a ferret owner as of current but I'm hoping to be a ferrant sometime soon and want to learn all I can about ferrets and about hollistic care before I adopt! I work at a vet clinic and all of my other critters (cats and dogs) are on special prescription veterinary food for their many health issues (so can't consider hollistic or raw for them sadly) but I also own hedgehogs and am working on switching them to a more balanced natural diet (they do still need some kibble however as their nutritional needs arent as well known as ferrets) as well as switching myself to a more natural / hollistic diet since being diagnosed this past month with some major digestive issues (severe Irritable Bowel Syndrome aka IBS and Gastroesophagael reflux disease aka GERD) I am immuno-compromised as well (I had H1N1 back in sept '09 - and although I was never dangerously ill from it, my new doctor tells me my lymph nodes are still full of scar tissue and my immune system still weakened from the virus - apaprently they are just now finding out that this virus can cause immune system issues up to 5 years later - yikes!) so I definitely need to be 100% educated and safe before considering trying raw foods (but seeing as I just spent the morning packaging and freezing my own raw meats - I'm not too worried as long as I take the right precautions). Other than that, now that you know my life story I have NO idea where to start in creating the right ferret diet and hope that I can learn all that I need to know from this forum ~ CarpetSharks37 (PS "Carpet shark" is seriously the cutest ferret nickname ever!! )

A fellow Calgarian- welcme And I'm glad to see you made it over here. Please, feel free to browse, ask question, post, and just generally take part in the conversations! You may want to pay particular attention to the nutritional sections. There's a TON of info here, so enjoy

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Bev we really try. It's very difficult to learn in a hostile environment. Hi and Welcome Stephanie I think if you do your research, you may actually find that your little ones on prescription diets could actually go raw, but I'm not here to convert you (well...maybe just a little bit ). The reason why I originally started to feed my furkids natural is because of prescription diets and the lack of true nutritional value. Please feel free to prowl, read the threads and more than anything ask questions. No one bites, well some of us have ferrets that bite ...but...we dont...our fuzzes they're work in progress ;D ;D ;D ;D we love them anyway Sometimes the hardest thing about natural feeding is trying to wrap ourselves around the misconceptions and sometimes outright lies that we've been told throughout our lives and actually seeing and understanding the actual truths and why they've been hidden. Good luck, I hope that your journey will be successful ciao

I will admit- the very best thing I ever did for my cat was to get him off of the prescription diet that wasn't doing everything it was supposed to. No, he's not on raw, more's the pity, but he is on a grain free wet, and the difference is phenomenal

I only want 2! But I hear a double level ferret nation 142 can fit up to four and it does seem so roomy ;D so wh knows! And I know about those two ferrets... don't tempt me! I am not ready yet! Have to wait a few more months! (This is what I tell myself when I'm on this forum instead of writing the 25% university paper and studying for finals that I should be doing right now... : Can't wait for ferrets!!!!

Yeah, my FN is blocked off currently and they only get one level. They're still on litterbox bootcamp. Makes me sad when I know they could have a whole cage, but I doubt they care. If I even give them a shelf they poop on it. So sad. And fyi, I heard three is best so that if something happens to 1 you have time to get another so nobody is every alone

I have a feeling I may end up having to do this litter bootcamp you speak of but that sucks you can't use the whole cage, hopefully they'll figure it out eventually That is what people keep telling me... but I'm pretty sure my mother wouldn't be too pleased if I got more than two... plus I figure if I get two now that leaves me some wiggle room for this so-called ferret math to kick in ;D That being said if I can find an awesome trio to adopt, then who knows! I suppose it is probably easier to get ones that get along in the first place but I just don't want to be overwhelmed... how many did you start out with?

i started with one. i've had four together now. i got joe first for a christmas present, and later on i got him a friend. he pasted away this month last year. so i had to get my girl a friend who had been left alone. i just picked up a big guy from the pet store. i couldn't left him there, he reminded me so much of my joe.
ferret math really is a true thing. ;D

I started with 1, but I wish I started with two. Having a single ferret is SO much work.

I'm definitely starting with 2 - I want them to be able to keep each other company when I'm at school / work even if it's just a sleeping buddy. I can imagine one requires constant attention!
I ended up with 3 hedgehogs and they can't even be housed together so I imagine ferret math will strike sooner or later!!!
