Keri -where did you get this news from? I am a catalog designer for Drs. Foster and Smith, so I hear it from our merchandising department, who gets it straight from Midwest. But I'm definitely not here on the board as anyone official for Foster and Smith! I can pass things along, but I don't have any spokesperson authority even if I wanted it. I was hoping we'd get in one of the new FNs for photography so I could check it out in person, but any cages that Midwest ships out right now are going to the customers that already have them on backorder.

Just sent midwest a message basically telling them that I'd originally purchased the 142 for the safety factor, but if they are going to be essentially a "snap together", I'll make my own cage from now on Such a shame they have to try to fix something that already works because someone whined

I don't mind a snap design, but why stop making the original? At least keep it for those who want it. I'll have to act fast and get a second FN before they're all gone

It's cost. You either manufacture one, or change everything over, and do the other one. To keep two separate lines going for the same basic product would make no financial sense.

Yeah, I see your point.
I think what worries me the most is the longevity of the cage. How will it stand to time?

This has pegs and metal tabs that fit it together. I agree this seems like a downgrade in overall hardiness, but honestly I'd still much rather have this than any other ferret cage! If I get a chance, I'll go kick around the Critter Nation a little more and see what else I can learn about disassembling it. Here're the instructions for assembling the CN if anyone's interested... they haven't updated it with the latest shelf design but the rest of it is the same as what the FN assembly will be: www.drsfostersmith.com/Media/PDF/71110%20Single.pdf

I'd rather have a little more work and a safe fuzz than something that's "convenient and easy," and that won't last or be as safe for the ferrets UH! I Agree! That's part of the problem with people today. I mean look at fast food. People want it quick and easy with little to no work, and they would rather that over quality and having a little work. I put my FN together by my self. And this is all while watching 2 small kids, the hubby texting me (he get's all worried/heart broken if I don't text him back ) AND being disabled (well I'm in the process of being declared disabled. Bad back and joints) Sure it took me almost 2 hours, but is wasn't HARD. I just took my time because of the craziness in my house and because of my back and joints. I just looked at the PDF for the critter nation and there is NO way I'm buying the new FN for my ferts. That IMHO looks SO unsafe for ferrets. Smaller animals like rats, sure. I use to have pet rats, I know how they are, so a "snap together" wouldn't be too much of a concern to me. But my ferrets get pretty rowdy some times. I would be SO scared of them making it fall apart. Looks like I'm going to have to look on craigslist and ebay if I want to get another 142 to make my double wide when the time comes.

Oh boy..I was planning on buying the FN 142 on the 18th....I'm assuming I'll have time to get it?! I'm not too impressed about the new models, hearing what it consists of and all of your opinions on it!

Are you planning on buying in store? Major pet stores should still have some old models.

I was planning on amazon... I think it MIGHT be a safe bet, as the old models show up in a search, but not the new ones? But then again, someone said they might just poop the new ones either way! Now I don't know what to do!
