A few minutes ago my parents put down one of our dogs, Donka ("Dune-Kah"). I wasn't able to fly down in time to say goodbye. She was a beautiful dog, a Blue Great Dane. Champion German bloodlines. We bought her as a pup while we were living in Germany. She was your typical goofy Dane. The gentle giant. Floppy, hairy, drooly, goofy, and loving. I always called her Eeyore because she was the most pathetic flop ever. If you weren't paying 100% attention to her, she would flop down on the floor and sigh, looking at you sideways to see if you noticed. You could almost hear her saying "It's not like anyone will ever notice!" But when you gave her attention, she was ecstatic. Donka LIVED for attention. Her sole purpose in life was to love and be loved. IF you gave the other dog (Holly the miniature schnauzer) attention, she would push in front of you so you could only pet HER. I used to make fun of her by calling Holly and petting her in a corner while blocking Donka out. She would get SO frantic and jealous, trying to squeeze her way in for loves. Of course I always gave Donka love after, she was just too funny to not make fun of. This dog traveled with us from Germany to New York. From there I left, and she continued on with the family to California and then to Fairbanks. I'm sure the stress of traveling didn't help her lifespan any, but when you are in the military you go where they tell you. I used to love laying on her. She made a great pillow. She was also about hip height on me, so I would lean over standing and just lay on her back and hug her. It was always hilarious watching people pet her after she drank water. It was always a game to try to pet her without getting covered in drool. When my parents moved out of their house in NY, they had to clean the drool off of the CEILINGS! She also put dents in the wall with her tail. lol She was a total Dope, and we always joked that she was the world's worst guard dog. Anyone who pet her was her best friend. She wasn't the brightest dog, you could all but hear her saying "DOPE!" when she looked at you. But she was the most loving dog we have ever had. There will never be another Dane like Donka.
Goodbye goofball, everyone will miss you and your floppy, lovable face.
Shane and Donka
Our last walk together earlier this month.
She LOVED attention.
She was your typical Dane - a Leaner
She thought she was a human one minute (and a lapdog the next)
Goodbye sweet, goofy Donka. You were a great dog, and a great friend. No one who met you didn't fall in love immediately. You charmed them all with your happy-go-lucky, floppy kisses and your undying love for attention. No dog ever loved as much as you did. Your absence is already noticed by the whole family. Even dad, who liked to pretend he wasn't attached. I hope the rainbow bridge treats you well and that you never run out of attention or fields to run in.
