So I know this is mainly a raw/whole prey forum but bear with me... I feed my dogs Innova and Evo is part of the ferret's mix. I am having a really hard time deciding what to do with this recent recall. I can't decide if I should continue feeding Innova and Evo or not. I mean, I'm not happy that the company is now owned by Nutura AT ALL, however, recalls happen across the board (and most are worse than this one was). Nutura didn't HAVE to extend the recall as far as they did, yet they made a statemet saying the health of their customers pets came first. On top of that, no animal, or human for that matter, actually got sick from their product. They have again extended the recall date so now the 1/4 bag of Evo and nearly full bag of Innova I have both are "bad." The food is obviously fine, no ones sick, but I am going to either get refunds from the stores or from Nutura (whichever route is easier for me, will call the stores in the morning). My dogs do well on Innova, my little Maltese can be sensitive and I've been happy since putting them on this food. I like the Evo for the ferrets as well. I can't find anything nutritionally comparable for the price. So what are you guys' thoughts? What would you do? A full revamp of everyone's food, or stay with this brand and feel confident that they took the right action when recalling? I feel like I'm between a rock and a hard place

Odds of the ferrets getting sick if they aren't immuno compromised aren't that high. Generally there is a much greater chance of YOU getting sick from handling it with these recalls. Personally I'd be looking at Orijen for both your dog and ferrets.

I was still feeding Diamond to 2 of my dogs through their last recall but after stuff came out about their facility and I did more research into kibble I just called it quits altogether. All these recalls make me nervous as h*ll so I just feed raw now. Personally in your situation no, I wouldn't keep feeding it, too soon after the last recall, they are going downhill with the buyout and it wouldn't be worth the risk to me. Fromm is another option you might want to look into, for the dogs at least or Orijen like Sherry said, they have some newer lines out that look good ingredient wise. I could never afford to feed that high end of kibble so have no personal experience with it.

I don't know if its because I'm waaay down in south FL or what but I'm never able to find Orijen. I've been looking into Fromm for the dogs at least. The little one has a sensitive liver so I've never been able to find a grain free food with low enough protein for her. I've been eyeing Fromm for them, seems pretty good so far..

there's always online, I had to order kibble in for several years until a store in town started carrying totw and diamond, otherwise it was science diet and grocery store far. mr chewys, doggiefood.com, and k9cuisine are some of the places I have ordered from before.

After reading up and looking at ingredient comparison charts and doing a mess of research, I'm not happy with Fromm. The grain free varieties are too high in protein for my little dog, and frankly, out of my price range. The normal varieties are too grain heavy for my preference. I am really having one h*ll of a time finding a food that is comparable to Innova. For the ferrets, I am currently feeding a mix of Evo canine turkey&chicken small bites and CORE cat. I really don't want to take the Evo out of their mix as 1)The protein and fat content is near perfect and 2)I have been unsuccessful finding any food even close to that quality for anywhere near the price. And I hate to say that, but price does play an influence, and for the nutritional analysis and ingredients listed in Innova and Evo, I haven't found anything even remotely similar. Maybe I'm missing some hidden brands?? At a loss

I'm sorry- but I'm no help at all with kibble for any carnivore. Have you considered raw for your pup? It really would be the ideal diet given his considerations.

I have considered it, but with my schedule and living situations, it really is so far from practical I try to give them the best I possibly can and hope that's enough, ya know?

Dr. Tims, Simply Nourish, Acana, Natures Variety, Wysong, Earthbone, Wellness? Never fed any but seem them used by others.

I can't be of too much help in the kibble department but I can say this. Part of the concern with Innova being owned by Procter and Gamble now is that the source and quality of ingredients will be changing to my understanding. That it has already been recalled so soon after changing ownership tells me that it probably has already changed. I don't know about the ferrets, but for the dogs have you considered Taste of the Wild? (Can you get it?) I think Nature's Variety was one of the brands suggested to me previously too.
For the ferret, is it financially feasible for you to order Orijen online? You might find some on Amazon with super saver free shipping...

Oh man, this has proved to be an exhausting ordeal. I love my little dog, but omg, she is seriously a pain in the butt in so many ways lmfao. I tell her every day she's lucky she's cute. Being a small breed dog, a Maltese on top of that, poorly bred (puppy mill rescue), with a poor liver, she can't have too much protein. She also has something going on which I believe is a poultry allergy and sensitive skin because she is always chewing at her feet. It got better after I switched them from Solid Gold (lamb) to the Innova (chicken/turkey), but not completely better so no hot meats for her either. So basically for the past umpteen hours I've been trying my butt off to find a no poultry, grain free (if possible), 'cool' dog food with decent ingredients. I think I've found one I'm close to satisfied with, TOTW Pacific Stream. It's grain free, no poultry, with a protein/fat content of 25/15. Ugh. I don't know if I'll feel the same about this food in the morning but for right now, it's giving me some sense of satisfaction. I still have no idea what I'm going to do about the ferrets' Evo. That is definitely not getting done tonight lol.

Diamond makes Taste of the Wild foods, both were recalled in that huge 2012 one. My dogs did well enough on either of those foods and I do still recommend it locally as there's nothing better or even close but most better informed on food won't feed Diamond products anymore because of the melamine recall and then the salmonella one. For your little dog, could you feed partial raw or canned? Maybe you could figure out better what she has issues with.

The thing is, she can't have anything with a protein percentage over 26%, so that pretty much cuts out any raw/freeze dried/dehydrated. I remembered about that recall they had late last night as I was trying to sleep of course. It seems like every flippin company has had some recall at one point or another. *

The biggest difference with raw is that the protein is much easier on the organs than any kibbles. So although higher protein you don't get the same problems that a high protein kibble triggers. Even animals with chronic kidney disease benefit from raw.
