Hello, I am new to this! I am thinking of switching my 2 ferrets to the raw diet. I was wondering what you could do, if need be ever, you weren't going to make it home. Is there some sort of dried or freeze dried possability? Obviously you cannot leave the raw food out! Just wondering in case! Thank you Alana

How long are we talking? Raw food can be left out for them to eat for up to 12 hours...whole prey can be left longer than that. Cannot arrangements be made, a neighbour to look in on your little ones? Take out food for them? Ferrets should never be left alone for longer periods of time anyway, like dogs they need care. ciao

I was thinking more in terms of over night. I have had them about a year and a half, and they have not had to be left yet, but just trying to figure everything out exactly before I switch. If it can be left 12 hours then I am not as worried Thank you!

Even overnight I'd be tempted to have someone come in and check on them. Either just before bed(depending on when you leave), or in the morning first thing. Things can still happen in the cage, too.

I agree with Sherry on this one. Too much can happen. I never allow my guys to alone longer than a 10 to 12 hr period. Either I get someone to sit my furbabies or I get someone to check on them. Truthfully, that's a long time for something as intelligent as a ferret to be left alone in cage. ciao

I've been wondering something along the same lines. I don't know what I will do if I had to go away for a day or more, as I don't know anyone who would be comfortable with feeding my kids raw. I thought about freeze dried but none of my babies will touch the stuff. Is it ok to put them on kibble temporarily until you return?

Generally, just baggie up the food, label it, and all the pet sitter/neighbor/friend has to do is come in and dump the meat in a dish They don't even have to touch it! But yes, if you are going to be away for any length of time, I'd have someone come in as a pet/house sitter, just in case a fuzz gets caught on something in the cage.

That is exactly what I do. Small bowls labelled with dates, even am or pm feedings. I also post a "todo" list of things that have to be done if I can't get home in time or have to call someone to look after the brats. Cages have photos and names on them of who is where. There is also certain things that are on a need to know basis identified with each ferret. Fun-Go is deaf and bites hard. Thor has had surgery on this date and still has stitches etc ciao
