Is she on Prednisolone or Prednisone though? You posted first she is on Prednisolone so it's probably as per your first post in this thread but they are two different drugs (which I'm sure you already know lol). Hopefully the FHL can give you some insight!

She is on Pediapred (prednisolone), same drug as prednisone but in a different form. Prednisolone is easier on the body since prednisone has to be converted to prednisolone by the liver. No worries! ![;)](http://www.holisticferretforum.com/images/Ferret_Smilies/wink.GIF) I basically shorten prednisolone to pred because that is what most vets will prescribe. The vet and I have basically been banging our heads on the wall, because we can't figure out what the problem is!

Even just cutting it back should have an effect of her losing some weight if it IS the pred. I developed an unusual side effect to champix- severe fluid retention. To the extent I gained 2.5lb in under 6hrs. After cutting the dose in half the fluid came off with a vengeance. It's something to look into anyway, and maybe trial.

My train of thought right now is that if she was gaining weight before the pred, could the pred have potentially exacerbated the problem?
Sherry - That is insane!!! It will never cease to amaze me what our bodies are capable of when it comes to medication.

That why I think maybe reducing the pred as a trial for a week will let her know.

Okay, I'll talk with the vet about that for sure!

It's worth a shot. If she doesn't start dropping even a bit, then you know it's not the pred.

I was able to talk to the vet about the potential water retention problem, and she said she didn't feel like that was the cause of her weight. She said that the weight was very palpable fat, and that it didn't indent the way normal heavy water retention would. Which is true.
She was pretty busy so I wasn't really able to discuss reducing her Pred dosage, but she is going to call me back.
She also found a place willing to do an ultrasound, for the low price of $500. She said she is looking around to see what other tests we can do as well.
For now we are making sure that Chia eats mainly low fat protein sources, and monitoring how much she eats.
Nobody from the FHL has really had any input, but hopefully this weekend some people will comment.

Wow! $500 for an ultrasound, is that right? I spent some time playing around the web, looking for unusual weight gain in ferrets, and really didn't find anything unusual. Just the normal reasons, too much food, not enough exercise, fluid buildup and of course, Pred. I did find a paper on hyperthyroidism and cardiomyopathy as causes. But, really nothing to report.
