On Monday (it is now Wed night here) I helped my Diablo to pass. He had adrenal disease, most notable for the extreme muscle wasting he had developed recently. I got him a suprelorin implant a couple of weeks ago and hadn't expected it to kick in yet but he was just going so far downhill that it felt cruel to make him wait to see if it would help. He, at least, seemed to still enjoy his lies in the sun but on Monday even that looked like he was enduring it, so I made the appointment to have him put to sleep. Although I know it was time, for some reason this has been one of the hardest ones to deal with, I haven't even told anyone (til this) except for my Mum, who came with me to the vet.
Here is a bit about my sweet boy.
Diablo was a very sensitive ferret, so sensitive to the moods of others. This pic is one of the first I ever took of him. I had had him less than a week when my Studdidoo had surgery for insulinoma. All the ferrets were very caring and made sure he always had a snuggle buddy while he recovered, including Diablo. I was very touched by how much care he took of him considering they had only just met. This is Diablo (the darker one) comforting Studdiddo.
And it wasn't just a one off either. He was the one who always grieved with me when ever anyone passed. He spent the entire time at the Pets Party a year and a half ago cuddling with my niece, who was on day release from her hospital stay for depression. When Sumo had his surgery, it was Diablo he first sought out for comfort. He was my little care taker.
He was also a ferret with a great sense of fun and a wicked sense of humour. I always said that if he was human he would have been into extreme sports. You could almost hear the giggle as he would run off with a 'can't catch me' attitude, to return an hour later once he'd had his fun. And it is because of Diablo that my top cupboards have a hairband round the knobs to hold them shut. He discovered he could climb up in there and dig in the sugar! He is also the one who started the giant hole in the lounge. My lounge is too low to the ground for a ferret to get under and dig up into it and so no-one had ever bothered it, until Diablo. He got up under the cushions and dug down! So here is a pic of Diablo enjoying ruffling everyone's feathers!
During this year I have been trying to get a pic of all my guys together having fun but someone is always off doing something else or runs off just as I click the button. This is the best of the few shots I managed to get with the four boys. Diablo is the one rolling round on the ground being cheeky.
These last few weeks have been very hard as I watched you get sicker and sicker, enjoying less and less, until even your time in the sun seemed to be something you were enduring, not enjoying. But I also treasure all the snuggles we got in that time and the shared moments, like when I would bring you a special drink of milkies to have in the sun, asking you not to tell the others.
Goodbye my sweet Diablo, here is our final pic together, that I had Ma take outside the vets before we went in for you to finally get to rest. You will always be in my heart.
With all my love <3
