Tomorrow's the day our little Yoshi-Rat gets to finally rest and rejoin her friend.
Her friend Dixie crossed over last November after aggressive mammary tumors made it difficult to perform her rat-ly duties, and Yoshi will follow her over tomorrow with similar tumors. Yoshi's weren't as aggressive or invasive and she lasted much longer than we'd expected (especially after her friend passed and she was alone in the cage), but we've decided to help her pass and ease her pain.
The ratties were my & my boyfriend's first real pets; we first got them about 2.5 years ago. We're glad they taught us how to be good pet parents, and now we can do the kindest thing and help our last rattie finally move on.

I'm sorry for your losses, both the old and the new. Rats are adorable, and make fantastic and loving pets. Unfortunately their lives are even more brief than ferrets.

I'm sorry for your loss. But yeah, if they taught you how to care for other pets, they did good, and I'm sure you gave them the best in return. I've never had rats, but my nephew (or should I say brother) has one and he was pretty friendly to me when I handled him. Yoshi's name will live on with my fuzzy of the same name.

I had "meeces" (mice) when I was a kid, and the little guys are really wonderful. Rats are even smarter than little meeces and even the meeces interact with people in very meaningful ways. In spite of their small size, these little guys occupy a huge amount of "heart space" - I'm so sorry for your loss. -jennifer

Thank you all for the kind words.
It's taken me a bit to come back to this, but I thought you'd like to hear: While we were in the waiting room before the appointment, we made friends with a much older couple and an "old mutt" as they put it. She had tumors as well and even though the dog was nervous, she and my Yoshi touched noses and the woman chatted about rescuing the dog a few years back and dealing with the cancer and what's to come. While we sat outside as they finished the procedure with Yoshi to bring out her body, the couple came out with their pup, and offered their kind words, and shared some tears. Their kindness meant a lot to us, and stayed with us as we buried Yoshi in her finely decorated box soon after.
