Ferrets Name: Bander Bear Age: 4 years Breeder: Marshalls Stone type: Cystine 100% Symptoms ferret exhibited: Straining to urinate Food ferret was on: Zupreem Grain Free Solution: Surgery
I recently joined the forum for the exclusive purpose of discussing our ferret's recent bladder stone occurrence. We were fortunate to notice that Banders was straining to urinate. Our veterinarian was able to quickly diagnose the condition and order X-rays which revealed 50+ stones in the bladder and several stones obstructing the urethra. We proceeded with the laser surgery (despite a high risk level due to renal failure). He came out of it okay and has healed quickly. He was on antibiotic and a pain killer for 10 days following surgery with orders to keep him quiet and confined.
If you're interested, I have the before and after X-Rays as well as the stone analysis report. The final ruling by the vet was that Zupreem Grain Free was likely the cause of the stones as the vet showed an established pattern between the grain free formula and stones. The recommendation of our vet was to switch foods. We most recently saw the vet today for a check-up and everything is coming along well. Next Friday is a blood draw for kidney values. Wish us luck.

Pre-op photo. You can discern the many cystine stones in the bladder and urethra. The doctor was able to open the bladder to remove the stones and flush the urethra. These stones were so big that I doubt many humans could pass them. Pre-op photo from a different angle. Post-op photo. All the stones have been removed. This is a photo of about 25% of the stones which the doctor gave to me. The other 75% were sent the lab. Can you image the pain my fuzzy must have been in with so many stones? He presented no symptoms until the day we took him in. That was the day he was straining to urinate. The doctor said he wouldn't have made it another night. Stone Analysis Report - 100% Cystine

Ferrets Name: Tate Monster Age: 7 yrs Breeder: Marshalls
Stone type: unknown Symptoms ferret exhibited: Taking a long time to pee, and only peeing small amounts. Food ferret was on: Nature's Variety Limited Ingredient Turkey cat food (4 yrs)
Solution: At this point, Tate is not a surgical candidate due to the location and number of the stones (ureter, bladder and urethra). Currently on Hill's Prescription Urinary Care s/d cat food, shown to dissolve stones in cats. Will be switching to raw when *fingers crossed* stones are dissolved. Due for Xrays 3 months post diagnosis. Will post images of his Xrays later.

Hello Everyone I hope I’am putting this in the right place, My baby Noodles a 4 yr old male, just had to have emergency surgery because his little bladder was completely full of kidney stone, The surgeon just finished the surgery got all of the stones out, did an X-ray to make sure everything was cleaned out, then found some hiding in his urethra inside the catheter,so back into surgery, My baby you all know how much we love our babies, so say a little pray of Noodles to pull through, or wish him well Please… the doctor said we’ll see how he does over night, and no news is good news. He’s always been a little quiet guy. I’m so worried, here I thought I was feeding him a High Protein diet trying to do everything right, I feel like I was poisoning my baby. 💔 The Dr. Said they are seeing more, and more ferrets with kidney problems a lot due to the way companies are labeling the food, as being high protein, but are not. So he has now been in the ER since yesterday afternoon. I just want to say Thanks for being here, because no one else understands our babies are our babies. Thanks so much. Maofnoodles&Noodles.

I said a prayer for your little one. I so hope he makes it. As for the food: some ferrets are prone to oxalate stones, so research what foods are high in oxalates and adjust his diet. Beware of "grain free" ferret foods. Most contain such things as peas, sweet potatoes, chick peas that are high in oxalates. Can you tell us what he is eating?

Thank You so much, Noodles is fighting❤️ Bless his heart, he has phenomena now, but not acting like it at all. I’ll try to make a thread for an update on my baby. Okay so his food up until the last two years has always been Marshals. Just the regular Marshals. Well he always has diarrhea from it, so someone recommended the Wysong epigen90 so I gave him a little of that you know gradually, nope Worse diarrhea ong it was terrible, poor little guy was miserable, so I held off on that, then I switched to a salmon, turkey Nulo which yes Lentils 😱☠️ I also had him on this Grizzly Super Foods Alaska Salmon So I was poisoning my baby. My vet said ABSOLUTELY NO GRAIN FREE CRAP. He will be on chicken baby food, she wants me to get some Ox Bo carnivore cure, and said about the wysong it’s better to have diarrhea then kidney stones. It is disgusting, how these food manufacturers are hiding ingredients, not disclosing ingredients, man literally I’am Scared To Death what to feed my baby. Hope I didn't blabber on too much. Thank You for asking about little Noodles. Tammy maofnoodles

I'm glad he's still fighting. Pneumonia is treatable. Please keep us updated.
As for foods, again: If you order online, you can click on the item and scroll down and you should see nutritional information, which should have ingredients. Some foods, like Wysong, have ingredients on the front label and you should be able to zoom on the pic of the bag to read them. Also, if you're going to feed only kibble, it's a good idea to mix several, in case one becomes unavailable, which has happened. There is a fairly recent food chart somewhere in this board. When I find it i will give a link, but I'm gonna be busy with a motorcycle rally this weekend. You can google ferret food chart, and go by any less than 2 years old for now. 2 that I used to feed are gone.
Wysong Epigen 90 changed formulas a few years back, and it caused a lot of diarrhea. They then came out with Epigen 90 Digestive Support which fixed the problem in a vast majority of ferrets. My ferrets have done well with it. I feed it, along with raw chicken grinds and decent wet kat food. In most pet foods, the technical sounding chemicals in the back 1/2-3/4 of the ingredient lists are nutritional supplements.
Give Noodles a hug for me.
