I have 3 ferrets. The boys both eat bone and have had an amazing improvement in their teeth. Nice pearly whites!! However, my little girl (about 3yr) is being stubborn about chunks, and is on raw mush still. (since oct/nov). I'm not given up totally yet on getting her on bone, however I need to do something for her teeth in the mean time. Her teeth are REALLY bad. Yellow canines, and blackish on the back teeth (zeke's were almost as bad but bone cleaned it up! ) Is there any natural teeth cleaners that are safe to use on ferrets??

I would start brushing them. I have been doing that, since mine are stubborn at change and only eat the raw mush. The difference in Zoeys teeth since I've been brushing them once a week is amazing. They are still stained and still has some tartar, but almost gone. And she has been eating kibble for nearly 6 years.

I think they make small cat toothbrushes with soft bristles. You could also try a baby tooth brush with extra soft bristles

I brush Sonny's teeth once a week. he has one molar that develops alot of tartar for some reason. i use the cat toothpaste and a little cat toothbrush. he actually enjoys it and he tries to eat the toothbrush. he likes the way the toothpaste tastes. LOL.

Hi why buy toothpaste ? make your own ! mix a little bonemeal ( pure calcium ) with a little oil to a paste dip on your brush and hey presto a paste they like that costs you nothing lol or you can use ground up cuttle fish bone ( again pure calcium ) simply grind down in a pestle and mortar add a few drops of oil for a white toothpaste ! ( cuttle fish can be bought from pet stores for penny s look in the bird supply isle they sell it for birds to chew on to trim there beaks ) hope this helps take care bye for now crazy lady

of course bone is natures toothbrush but if you don't yet feed raw or are still in transition I found that N-bones ferret treats really do help clean their teeth in combination with regular brushing.
Forgot to add my oldest Loki (7+) was about 1 1-2 2 when we got her and her teeth were how you describe.
She went missing last summer and the lady who ended up with her had 2 boys and thought she was a baby because of the condition of her teeth.

What kind of treats do you mean? I haven't found any treats that are suitable for ferrets, other then dehydrated organs, which of course she wont touch lol

For treats, meat jerky treats are really good. Along with anything freeze dried. Just make sure to check the ingredients for salt, spices, veg., etc.

hi why not make your own jerky ? simply thinly slice pieces of meat and dry in a dehydrator you can dry anything this way from venison to chicken rabbit duck the list is endless ( a good natural one is slivers of chicken soaked in clam juice then dried its super rich in taurine after soaking and they simply go wild for it lol ) take care bye for now crazy lady

Yes it's a great idea... but she wont eat the ones I have, my baby who eats EVERYTHING wont even touch the dehyrdrated stuff, one zeke will eat it. I dont have a dehydrator, but did save someones directions on how to use the oven to do it, incase i feel adventurous. Sherry what's the difference between freeze dried and dehydrated?

Hi remember to use a unflavoured unsalted meat tenderiser ( available in the local store ) to break down this sinews in the meat a little because even though those teeth are tough once meat is dehydrated even your fuzzies need a little helping hand to chew through it lol take care bye for now crazy lady
