I switched Sydney and Scout to Wysong Epigen 90 from the crap Marshal kibble last week. They took an immediately liking to it and picked it out and left the Marshal kibble I'd mixed in to wean them behind. So I've just been giving them the Wysong (it took only a day and a half). I've noticed that the smell of their poops is much stronger and worse, though the appearance of it looks healthier. Is the smell normal, or is it their bodies adjusting, or should I be concerned? They are eating a lot more, which I take as a good sign. The only thing we have left to find to make the soup is chicken heart, which I should be able to get from a special market after work this week.

Even going onto a better quality kibble can trigger detox. That's what you're seeing now. It will get worse on raw for a while

As long as there is no need to worry!! The smell just hits you like a wall right now haha! I'm cleaning the pans out 2 or 3 times a day.

It really does "hit you" ;D When we switched our latest 4, I couldn't wait for detox to finish. Took almost 6 weeks

I'm glad they took such a liking to it!!!
The kind of litter you use can be a contributing factor to how well odor is controlled as well...opinions on litter vary around the forum but personally I have found World's Best Cat Litter multi-cat formula to be the best. It tracks some but does well with odor control, and that is key for me.

Yeah I woke up this morning and almost gagged lol! Oh well at least they're eating tasty food.
Freya - I've been using the recycled newspaper stuff. It does a pretty decent job, especially with absorption. They kept pooping in random corners, too, so I just stuck litter pans all over the cage and now they use only those haha! Little boogers. They don't play as long as they used to. Need to get them on some raw/natural diet! Can't wait for THAT detox hahaha!

does switching to raw also cause really liquid poops as well? ive been feeding a raw soup mixed with some ground kibble ( so they will eat it) for about a week now, and ive been seeing some terrible things in the litter box. Is that normal? I know you arent supposed to feed kibble and raw in the same time frame, so im hoping thats all it is.

It definitely can, yes. I'd just keep an eye on it, and see if they get lethargic or lose appetite. You can also try giving them probiotics and a little bit of pumpkin to firm the stool up. How much kibble are you putting into the soupy?

i'd say its about half ground kibble and half commercial raw. Im trying to slowly take away the kibble, but some of my guys are a little reluctant

Some ferrets do not do well with raw mixed with kibbles (digestion issues). Different digestion rates of kibbles and raw can upset stomachs and cause really disgusting poos. Watch very closely because this can cause bacterial issues building up in the stomach. I know many people can feed both mixed, some switching soupies actually advocate this. I do not like to mix the two. It's a personal thing but that is why I don't do it. ciao

I just noticed this too, it was quite a bit worse this morning. We've got our boys on soup made from some kibble, raw chicken breast, little egg shell and a little iams kitten food. That's what we had on hand this week when Rosco got sick & they were both not eating. They love it. We haven't given them dry kibble in 2-3 days. The past few days I've noticed their poo is a healthy brown color and pretty soft, which I figured since their bodies are adjusting to the soup diet, but this morning it was REALLY soft as in a puddle of mush (sorry for the detail). Is this normal?
Our mix has been 1 chicken breast with about 1/4 cup kibble. Should I start using less kibble?
I'm going to try the pumpkin suggestion. Where do I get it, is there a certain kind of pumpkin? Thank you so much! (sorry for all the questions)

As mentioned before sometimes kibbles and raw don't mix so one has to deal with the disgusting poops until the kibble is out of there. The other is you can add some powdered egg shell 1/2 tsp to 8oz of meat and some pumpkin. I use about a tsp to 8 oz. The pumpkin you use is found in the baking aisle but make sure you don't use pie filling....not the same thing at all. Pure ground pumpkin, that's what you want. You can use a pumpkin and cook it up but they're a little hard to find at this time of year. ciao

I have another question about their poops. We've been giving them raw chicken soup now for the last 1 to 2 weeks. This last week we quit putting kibble in it. We've been putting hearts, chicken breasts, egg shells and water.
At first their poo was really runny, then it started to firm up and now it's gotten really runny again. They seem to be acting fine and they look healthy, but their poos (or least one of theirs) is just runny runny runny. We don't have a coffee grinder or one of those pestle things, so we've been trying to blend the egg shells as small as we can, maybe it's not small enough to do anything? I see egg shell in their poo, so maybe it's not doing anything? We had pumpkin in it too all week except for the batch we made this morning. Any ideas?
I have some pepto left from when Rosco was at the vet. I'm pretty sure Boss is the one with the issue, so should we give him some? Having the runs is probably bothering him.

Ok, I was wrong, they BOTH still have supper runny poos. Poor little guys.
I think we need to get the eggs shells into more of a powder - do you think that will help? For a batch w/ 1 chicken breast how many full egg shells should be used? If we use pumpkin, how much pumpkin should we be putting in? Is too much bad for them?
Thanks!

Yes, the egg shells need to be in powder form. Either a coffee grinder or a mortar and pestle would be needed. The ratio would be 1/2 tsp eggshell powder to 8oz of meat. You can also add pumpkin if you like. 1/2 tsp a day per ferret
