Excellent...someone needs to post this to the FML! I'd suggest the FHL, as well, but Sukie would never allow it.

That was very informative I managed to get my one cat to eat a bit of cooked chicken finally! They wouldnt touch it raw, so i tried cooking it and we'll move backwards from there. The other cat nibbled at it, and Jinx still looked at me like I was poisoning her. I even put some ferretone on it but that didn't help either haha. But I digress, I liked the article. I remember my vet telling me when my oldest cat became ill with a UTI, that they weren't taught much about foods and nutrition of pets in vet school...this seems like a rather important preventative measure to me?

I love Dr. Karen Becker! I really wish she was in my area... I "liked" her on Facebook and she posts updates and photos of what she does quite frequently.

I don't know if Bill would allow it- it would start the food wars all over again, and it's not that long since they've ended ;D I'm not on the FML, but friends do send me posts they think I'd be interested in. I don't remember when a natural diet was last discussed there, but I thought an authoratative source might get the more knowledgeable people on there to at least consider it for their ferrets.

listserv.ferretmailinglist.org/archives/ferret-search.htmlFML is the Ferret Mailing List, where people email the moderator with ferret-related things, and he compiles all of it into a daily email to the entire list. There are a few people who make up the bulk of the emails (and have for years), and they're not raw diet fans. Seems like once or twice a year the list gets a little, um, argumentative about it.

i just read some of the threads from december. looks like people tend to get real sensitive about the food issue. i tend to avoid these raw food conversations with everyone, including veterinarians. some people get crazy and they can't handle it. "he's gonna get salmonella! e coli! your POOR dog! how can you do that to him!" whatever. a few months ago someone at work asked me about e coli or salmonella and then i asked them if they ever saw a wolf cook his meat. then you get the "well you have a point there" comment. like it suddenly makes sense to them when you put it that way. i just can't understand why people freak out over this. my mom grew up on a farm. they never fed their animals kibble or any other commercial store bought food. the dogs always ate table scraps and whatever chicken eggs or rotting carcasses they could find out on the farm. the cats always ate raw meat, table scraps, and whatever birds and snakes they managed to catch. its the city folks that freak out over this stuff. btw, i am one of those "city folk" but raised by a farm girl so i know better-- sometimes people become really nasty and accusatory with their comments. i feel bad for the people that run ferret shelters. i used to feed kibble out of convenience and i stopped after one of my ferrets developed insulinoma. but i am down to one ferret and i can afford to buy him expensive freeze dried, commercial raw and i have time to prepare him his little meals every evening. these shelter people they are often criticized and they get really offended because they are doing the best they can with limited resources. they are made to feel as though they are poisoning these ferrets that they are trying so hard to care for by feeding them kibble. they don't have money to go out and get expensive commercial raw foods and they don't have time to prepare balanced home made raw foods for their ferrets. i know a woman who has 35 ferrets in her care. alot of them are old and sick. she has very few volunteers. that must be overwhelming. alot of the shelters have dry ferret and cat kibble donated to them. April at Totally Ferret donates alot of TF to the ferret shelters. so the whole food thing is a sensitive issue with them especially because really they do the best they can (and, kibble or not, i applaud them for what they do.) without them these shelter ferrets would be dead.

The biggest argument last on the FML was concerning Bob Church. It seems he finally got a little tired of being taken out of context, and wrote a goodly sized message in confirming his belief, research, and experience about raw helping to avoid things like insulinoma, and basically told kibble feeders they were essentially slowly killing their ferrets Haven't heard much from anyone about it since ;D
