It's been a week now, it's still hard to believe she's gone. I hear her flip the metal water bowl, but she's not there. I catch a flash of white....but there are no ferrets out. She's been here forever. I miss her so much. My beautiful wee little girlie. She had said goodbye so many times to so many of her friends....Attila, Ghenghis, Porthos, Mad Max, Mayhem, Thor, Napoleon, Nicodemus, Meeteef, Athos, Aremis, Loki, Captain Jack, to name only a few...so many. It would be easier to list the ones she left behind....Odin. They were the last of this business, the last of the old timers.....Lady "B" and Odin....now Odin is alone . Lady "B" was 8 yrs old. Not a bad age for a farm ferret...but we all know, they never stay long enough.
She came as one of 3.
Surrendered because of allergies, or at least that's what they said. Such gorgeously marked ferrets, exotic for the time. She was so large for a female, so beautiful, so strong. Ghenghis, Attila....accepted their new names, but not this wee girlie. In the end she chose her name Lady "B" Ichy.
She set herself up as alpha, along with her partner Attila, a large mutt marked boy. She ruled with an iron paw, despite being deaf. They kept peace in a business that grew to 18 strong at one point.
Attila passed away, suddenly of a massive coronary, leaving Lady "B" devastated and forever changed. A piece of her died that day. He left with a piece of her heart. Now they're together once again. There will be much dancing and dooking. She does not journey alone, there would have been many to come and greet her.
I do not begrudge her journey, she has fought so hard these last few years. She had become a shadow of her former self, from a prime weight of just under 3lbs to weighing only 10 oz. It broke my heart to pick her up but still she fought.....and then it was enough. I looked into those dark eyes. They no longer had that hard look, that was hers. There was a look of withdrawl, of distance. My little girl was leaving, it was time. She spent the morning snuggled up with Odin...he didn't leave her, not once. She and I went for a walk about, before leaving. For the first time in a couple of days, she appeared alert. I couldn't help hoping....then she curled up in my coat and went to sleep. I felt her warmth while I walked but Lady "B" was far away. We drove to the vets and still she slept. She didn't wake when a dog came over to sniff her. The vet and I discussed "alternative possibilities". No, it's time. She did wake, long enough to fight the needle, causing the vet to stick me . I gave her some oils, she licked the oils and then relaxed and slipped away. There was no need for strong drugs, she left on her own time, in her own way. My little girlie, I miss you but you're happier now. There is no pain and you're once again sleeping with your best friend and soulmate.
Life and times with my beautiful Lady "B"
Lady "B" and Porthos
Attila, Ghenghis and Lady "B"
Odin and Lady "B"
Lady "B" and the "egg"
Lady "B" and friend
Gentle journey my sweet wee girlie. I know we will meet again, be it in dreams or to dance some moonlit night. Once again, I will hold you. Until we meet again my wee one, play wild and dook free.
ciao
