Tink's update took a turn in the wrong direction yesterday She did not eat all day, and I tried feeding her some Duck Soup while the "chicken goo soup" (lol) was defrosting and she absolutely refused that. I did manage to get some of the chicken goo soup in her, she wasnt happy about it but she took it when I syringe forced it on her, the goo is made of chicken(with a little skin) and chicken liver. I was hoping after she got a meal into her she would start eating again but did not touch her food all night. I just feed her another bit of chicken goo but only got 1/2 of what I got into her last night, she really fought against it and kept rearing back and acting like she wanted to throw up, then she ran into her cage when I let her go and started rubbing her face on the floor of her cage and pawing at her mouth and making hacking noises, but I dont think anything came up.Is there anything I can give her for the naseua? I just dont know what to do...If you have any other ideas... I think she has given up and is depressed.... And I know she is old and sick (Insulinoma)... Maybe it is just her time? Please email me because I wont have access to my computer til later and I can check my email from my phone all day KLH_Pets@yahoo.com Thank you all, you guys have already been a great help.

The insulinoma does make them very nauseous. What is her blood glucose ? Is she on prednisone? If pred is not effective, you may want to speak to your vet about adding diazoxide (proglycem). For one of my ferrets, diazoxide worked much better than pred. She may also have ulcers. Being sick stresses them and they sometimes get ulcers. Also, always give pred after food. If you don't, it will cause ulcers. Do you see little coffee ground looking things in her stool? Or dark tarry looking stools? Or black stringy things in the stool?

I have been force feeding her the chicken goo soup i have made up in the freezer. it makes her naseous to eat but she sort of licks it up when i ooz it into her mouth, and then tosses her head and tries to run away so bad. i have to scruff her and hold her tight that i feel so bad and like i am hurting her but i know she needs food in her... also her poop is bad green diahrea, she tends to poop and pee when im force feeding her. i only got 1/2 a tsp into her this afternoon i will feed her again as soon as i get home from school.

I don't want to alarm you but if you have an insulinomic ferret that only ate half a teaspoon of food today that is not good. Is she on prednisone or any medication for the insulinoma??? You should really take her in ASAP. She needs to eat and she needs fluids.

well she is used to dry food so i figured the diahrea was from the change in diet to the chicken goo soup... i am getting pred this afternoon but i cant get food in her, i tried last night and she starts violently thrashing and pawing at her mouth til it bleeds and has explosive diahrea when i try to force feed her, jus the smell of food made her gag, water makes her gag all though she has tried drinking through out the night a few times...how am i suposed to get pred in her if i cant get food in her, it seems like she loses more fluids in diahrea than i get into her...i was up all night keeping her company, i had her out in the pen so i could keep an eye on her, i spent half the night in the pen with her, and she spent a few hours in my bed with me...am i better off feeding her plain chicken baby food instead of chicken goo soup?

Diarrhea happens with insulinoma. Definitely try the chicken baby food. Sounds like you really need that pred. Imagine how she feels. she is very nauseous and someone is trying to make her eat. The thing with pred it has to be given after food. Do you have EVO ferret or cat kibble? soak some in water overnight and get it mashed up really well with the back of a spoon until it is a thick paste.. Put water in it until it is soup and microwave it 12 secs until luke warm. Sometimes when they are sick they will prefer to eat warm foods. You may be making her gag with the syringe. Always stick it in through the side of het mouth and shoot the food towards the roof of her mouth (that way she doesn't choke or breathe in food) in small amounts to let her swallow. Scruff her and hang her if necessary so she doesn't move. There are videos on YouTube on how to scruff a ferret. For now, I think she should be getting at least 10cc of food in one sitting. Is buy her some pedialyte too. The clear one. Mix 1/2 pedialyte and 1/2 water and give her 15 ccs every few hours it as much as she'll drink. Out of curiosity what happens when you get something with sugar in her? Does she act normal and eat then? Do you have honey?

BTW, you mentioned that you are getting pred today so I assume she hasn't been on any medication for this. Has she been officially diagnosed with insulinoma? Do you know what her blood glucose is? I had a ferret that wouldn't eat. Gagged, threw up, pawed at the mouth, etc. I immediately thought insulinoma but it turned out he had ulcers in his mouth, throat, stomach, because he had kidney failure. One more thing, If she's used to dry food, leave dry food out for her (until you get her stable with meds).

yes she also has her dry food out. She has not been officially diagnosed by a vet because there does not seem to be a vet in my area that specializes in ferrets, but i have talked with ferret rescues when i first got her a few weeks ago and told them how she acted (because she was acting sick) and we all came to the conclusion of insulinoma because she had the symptoms, she zones out (its at her worst when she hasnt eaten like when i first got her), has that drunken wobbly walk in her back end, pawed at her mouth then, but she had started eating for me and was doing so well, even started to gain a little weight. then monday she crashed...I am suposed to be getting her some pred this afternoon, of course ny is having a snow storm, hopefully the roads wont be to bad by then. I have not tried giving her any karo syrup b/c everything sayd dont give it to them unless they are seizing... And i do put the syringe in the side of her mouth... I will def get some pedialyte when i go out. Give the pred after food? Or right before?

That breaks my heart. I hate buzzard owners that do things like that. It makes me want to find them and beat them up.

I know, and I have never owned a healthy ferret, let alone a sick one . I am trying to learn quick and do the best I can but there is just so much to know about them. I didnt realize they were so sensitive.

Yes they are. it is a big learning curve. sometimes they get really attached to their owners and when they are abandoned it really hits them hard. you are very nice to have helped her. If I lived near you I'd drive over and help but seeing as I am in Florida that is not really possible. What kind of pred are you getting? Pediapred? Can your vet check her blood glucose? You dont have to be a ferret expert to do that.
