I was pretty worried when I took my ferret into the first surgery I've had to let any of my guys have. It went well (minus the allergic reaction he had to some salve they used on his eye). Even non-ferret knowledgeable vets should be able to perform basic surgeries, which this one is. It's when they need to have surgery near their heart or spine when it gets complicated. Granted, this IS surgery so there is always risk of infection, but otherwise the surgery itself should go smoothly and as long as you keep an eye on it after surgery, you and he should be good to go

Sorry- but have to dispute about non ferret knowledgable vets doing ANY surgery on a ferret. They have some very special needs every time an anesthetic is used on them. The vet has to have what's needed to keep their body temperature stabilized for one. It drops VERY rapidly as soon as they are put under. They also need equipment sized for small animals.

Even the most knowledgeable ones can mess it up...not knowing what they need to know is just scary. Ferrets as Sherry mentioned have a terrible time regulating their body temps and they also react badly to a lot of aneathetics. Not knowing or understanding this will be fatal. The issue that my vet hates is that they bleed out in seconds often giving your surgeon a lot less time to react than with many other animals. I lost a healthy wee boy who had been put under to set a broken leg. Athos went through the surgery in flying colours, but his heart stopped in recovery. Bacchus will pay for the rest of his life because the vet was an idiot and didn't check his heating pad before putting a deeply under ferret on it There is no such thing as a simple surgery with a ferret ciao

Hang in there....I understand the terror..... To be honest, the growth looks very well defined and superficial, I suspect that the surgery will be quick and easy with a good outcome.
Even so, it's always scary when pets undergo surgery - and I am certainly no expert!
Sending healing thoughts and ferret prayers your way. -jennifer

Let me explain what I meant. By non-ferret knowledgeable, I mean someone who has knowledge, but doesn't specialize in them. We had to take ours for various cuts and bumps and one for a colonoscopy-type thing to a vet who worked with rabbits, dogs, and cats. They told me they know how to handle ferrets medications and simple surgeries, just not anything close to the heart or spine. I've heard similar things from other ferret owners. That's all I meant. Either way, your fuzz is in my thoughts.
