Picked up Tramadol for Koda. Got home and gave him some. Within about 2 minutes he was throwing up all over. The vet who is in today doesn't deal with ferrets at all. The vet we saw is going to be in at 7 and she will call me. In the meanwhile, we are watching him closely. He went right to sleep. Has anyone else had experience with Tramadol reactions like this in ferrets?

I've only ever used buprenorphrine. Although they, like us, can be allergic to anything so why not tramadol poor little guy. That vomiting must have been painful

Now he's lethargic. But that's no change from the last few days. He could be nauseous still from the meds, nauseous from an empty belly, or just sore... I have no way of knowing!

Odds are he's dealing with the pain of the incision. If he vomited the pain med so quickly not much, if any, would have gotten into his system. I'd leave him sleep, and just wake him up to feed for now.

I let him walk around the room a bit, and then he curled up on the bed with Shane and I and went back to sleep. After a while I woke him up and he ate a few spoonfuls of chicken soup for me, so that's good. So far so good with keeping that down. In a little while I'll offer him another spoonful. I'm going to try to keep small amounts going in every hour or so so he doesn't get too nauseous.

Tramadol can cause sedation, so I'm not surprised that he's lethargic. Just keep an eye on him. Poor mite, he's been through a lot.

I personally take tramadol for my headaches and jake, our poodle, took it when he had a slip disk. it does make you sleepy. you may want to try giving him some food, than Waite 30 min than give him the pain meds. our vet had me give it to jake after a meal. he most likely threw it up due to taste. I know if the pill sets in my mouth for any length of time, it gives off a nasty taste.

Thanks guys. We decided to just refill the buprenorphine, but after waiting it out a bit he seems to be doing well enough without the meds, so he is now off all pain meds.
