ok so i'm really worried! i talked to my friend who used to own Sheldon (also a Vet's assitant) and she saw this big plump pussy blob on his butt and said "oh well he's a marshall's ferret so he's descented and neutered...it might be an abscess from a bite from your other ferret?" oh great... that's helpful! not -.- i know its not that... its pussy and oozing and it looks like an impacted anal gland to me... ive heard the marshalls often botches jobs... i mean they do a crap load of ferrets every day. I would really like an input. i'm gonna take him to the vet but for now im applying a warm compress every hour for 5 minutes and i'm gonna wait to see if it clears up :/ the other possibility is that he has a blockage maybe? he's been have very SMALL birdseed like poops for a couple weeks and the occasional healthy one. if its not a blockage what could cause this? i feed them good kibble and meat soup i'm just really worried cuz his brother is totally healthy and has normal poopies. long story short.... im going to the vet but need some advice >.< also im reposting this as i couldnt get my pic to upload the first time. i took down my old one

I'm going to say probably abscess because of what appears to be a small black scab right there but definitely go to the vet. That's a very delicate area.
I'm sure he'll be fine if it is an abscess, don't worry toooo much, I had a rat get one inside of his penis. It was a blast to clean out but healed up just fine. It was horrifying, full of bright green, smelly, slimy puss that EXPLODED out his urethra but was fully healed in less than a week. Abscessing is a sign the immune system is working by isolating germs so if that's what it is, good wound care and maybe some medicine will clear it up.

And this wouldn't be the first time I've seen a botched descenting from Marshall's I'll bet that IS what you are dealing with. We had another member on here who's wee one had to have a surgery to finish removing the anal gland when the mill had screwed it up.

This is a job for a vet. As Bev mentioned there are too many possibilities and if not dealt with properly you could have some major health impacting (no intention of a pun here ) problems. You could try applying a warm tea bag (the tannin from the tea bag will pull the poison) ciao

what type of tea will do? orange peako? lol sorry dumb question. also the condition has worstened... i might have to get a different vet because my vet only seems interested in telling me stupid crap like it's a bug bite and that if its not that then i should come see him so he can do xrays and blood tests that are gonna cost a bagillion dollars! he says its a either a bite or lymphoma. hes only 1 and a half come on and if it was lymphoma it wouldnt develope over night and be oozing blood and white thick puss. which leads me to the "its worstened" part. Yesterday it was clear fluid with a little blood. it looked a lot like an ingrown hair would (come on ladies i know you've had one before lol) last night we squeezed some out and it got smaller and WOW was he ever happy, Sheldon war danced all over the house and was super playful, im pretty sure it was causing him pain and we relieved some. but now its much bigger and he's scooting and doesnt seem happy. I'm obviously gonna take him to a vet but my fiance doesnt want to take him back to our old vet and now i dont know where to go. Anyway im gonna call around for a small pet/exotic pet doctor :/

Definitely go to a different vet! If there are any shelters in your area talk to them. And just an FYI(although I'm sure you know already, the odds of that being either a bite or lymphoma are pretty small. I'm glad you were able to relieve some of the pressure before it ruptured. As for the tea, just good old black tea. Also- a very warm(bath water hot) soak will help as well.

This happened to me! My girl Mika (who is a "real canadian" ferret) had an anal gland absess this past spring. I took her in to a vet that wasn't my regular vet (and was not an exotic vet unfortunately, but she said she was comfortable dealing with them) and she took one look at this large lump and said "oh, anal gland absess". I had it drained and cleaned out and have never had a problem since. My vet really gave me a funny look when I told her and she told me she shouldnt have anal glands.... man was I confused

I hope you can find a competent vet. That definitely needs some care.

so they still have anal glands? gah i'm so confused It looks pretty ouchy nevertheless and now its more bloody and i cant even squeeze stuff out without hurting him a crapload. so what would the vet do when i get there? squeeze it or lance and drain it? my old labrador had one of these before and my mom just popped it with a needle and squeezed it out o.o the dog seemed fine afterwards but in nooo way am i ok with popping poor shelly's bum! my current vet seems retarded towards ferrets. hes like an exotic vet and hes "the best in town" (able to do surgeries and well known by dog and cat owners...) but hes like really expensive and has no idea what hes talking about half the time! He told me it was ok to feed ferrets pieces of fruit as treats! i swear he just wants my poor fuzzles to have tooth decay or an anal blockage! CHA-CHING$!$!$ i can only imagine what would happen if i brought him a sugar glider -.-

Marshalls usually removes the anal glands. However, it is not unheard of for them to do the surgery incorrectly, leaving then partially intact.

my next set of fuzzles will come from a reputable breeder -.- and i'll get a proper vet to do the surgery, one that has the time and care.

Actually, removing the anal glands is not necessary, and many vets actually consider it mutalitation.
A ferrets anal glands do not actually poof like a skunk. It smells like a fart (a bad one lol) but it does quickly dissipates and doesn't linger the way a skunks poofs do. The usually only do it when scared or possibly extremely excited.

Any reputable vet will NOT mutilate them in this manner. That's what I really hate about the mills. Descenting is in no way, shape, or form needed excepting a medical reason.
