In the Netherlands, the implant is already one of the normal options to choose at the vet, when neutering your ferret. The research for the implant started in 2004 with Nico Schoemaker (Dutch vet at the University). In 2005, my 4 ferret males got an implant and I was very happy with it. After the died (2011 and 2012), I got Sjeng from a shelter and he was not castrated and smelled . So I asked my vet to give him a implant and made pictures of him every week. I thought this might be interesting for you as well. I translated it in English, but when something is not clear, please let me know.

Oh wow! That is an incredible resource! Actually, this would also be a great resource for another forum, www.ferretdes.proboards.com. It is ran by a US breeder and it is a site dedicated to using deslorelin for castration. It is a rather new idea here in the US, but with the increase of adrenal disease due to neutering and spaying, more and more people are looking into it. Your input on the other forum would be really helpful as you have much more experience than anyone I've met. By the way, your english translation is awesome. You made an awesome collage

Wow that is fantastic! And like Jackie said, great job on the English! You did a better job than a lot of people I know here in the US ;D

Thanx you!! I registered on the other forum and have to wait to be accepted :-). The research started in the Netherlands for male ferrets and I feel lucky to have two ferret-dedicated-vets in our country :-). I know them both and when my four males got the implant in 2005, it was still a research. My ferrets died in 2011 and the last one in April 2012 and none of them had adrenal problems. The implant is in the Netherlands only registered for male ferrets (and dogs), but also given to females (and to cats ). I have no experience with the females, because since 2005, I only have male ferrets :-) There is another article from 'our' Dutch ferret-vet here about the implant, but it is Dutch. So I link the Google-translate-page. translate.google.nl/translate?sl=nl&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=nl&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.frettenkliniek.nl%2Fvoorplanting%2Fhormoonimplantaten

I'm curious, how old were the two who had the implants in 05 and passed in 11 and 12? Nice job on documenting Sjeng's progress with the implant:)

They were six and seven years old.
The last two had kidney-failure :-(. The vet thinks it was a virus, because she has seen more often kidney-failure in ferret-groups. But this is still under research..

Very nice presentation! I am curious... Does the implant have any effect on their coat or muscle tone? I realize that this post was originally two years ago. Did Sjeng slim down after the implant? I am curious, because I am considering an implant for my two intact boys.

From what I've read their musculature etc stays closer to an intact ferret than it does when neutering is done.
