Still don't quite understand what is going on but we are going to the ER to see Gir soon and determine what we are going to do. Long story short, he came out of surgery fine but when they went to xray and ultrasound him they found that uriine was still backing up into his system. They found stones in his ureter going from his kidneys to his bladder. They said they can try to get it out but it is almost impossible for ferret because thye are so small, and even if they were able to get this stone out the other bigger ones would follow. She gave us months at best, but probably less before these stones would get caught and then there would be nothing they could do. She also said there is no way to do surgery on kidneys to get the stones out. Is this true? We are facing having to uthanize him so I need to know anyuthing you might know. I'm sorry for the bad spelling, I''m crying so much right now.

THe doc said she just doesn't understand. He is so healthy and beautiful other than these d*mn stones. She almost cried on the phone with me, she said she's never seen stones like this before. I don't think she thinks there is much chance but I want to give him every chance i can, but I don't want him to suffer either. I jsut don't know what to do. I'm sorry for crying on here but I just wanted to know if anyone else has dealt with this and if so if there is a chance he can make it through something like this, having stones pass thru his ureter.

Can you call some of the doctors of the University of Florida veterinary school in Gainesville? It's close enough that you could bring Gir there and they may know more modern things to try. I am so sorry I don't have better advice

Yes, definitely! They won't have the time to properly grieve(can take a couple hours frequently), but at least they'll not be left looking for him. Also bring a bottle of RR with you for them AND for you.

I don't know that he'd be up to seeing them, as he'd likely be sedated for pain Use the time at the vet's to get YOUR grief under control. Then you'll be better able to help them with theirs

I would be tempted to get a second opinion from some place else. Like the university jacksmomma mentioned.

As there was a point where we suspect Momo might have had kidney stones, I sent my vet an email asking what treatment he would have recommended. He said that there really isn't a successful treatment for ferrets with kidney stones.

I know nothing about ferrets and kidney stones...but they have this sonic-kidney-stone-sound-blasting technique for *humans* that, when combined with medication to dilate the ureters, can make troublesome stones pass. If I recall correctly, they blast a certain sound frequency towards the kidneys that makes the stone blast into smaller pieces...the medication then helps the stones pass from the body more easily. I have absolutely no idea if this is something that is even possible to think about applying to ferrets....I honestly don't know enough about it....but it might be worth mentioning to your vet (unless someone else here can set me straight on the subject) Good luck. So sad You are all (fuzzy & human) in my thoughts and prayers.

I don't understand why he still has stones in there? Did they not do a full cystotomy (opened up the bladder and scooped out the stones) when they did the PU? I know he's got the kidney stones as well but... Poor little guy, I'm hoping you're able to figure out a solution quickly for him, it seems so unfair for you to have come this far for it to end this way.

Weezily, it appears that stones are coming down from the kidneys after they removed them from the bladder and urethra. And those ones still number in the hundreds and a good number are STILL too large to pass through the rebuilt urethra Between that, and the fact the new urethra was jammed with stones to the effect that they cannot be flushed because they are so large did not lead to a good prognosis. Surgery could not easily or successfully be done on a just rebuilt urethra
