My 1 year old ferret Mico hit his head off a sliding closet door yesterday. My boyfriend wasn't paying attention and Mico went to run into the closet and he slid it shut real quick. Poor Mico caught his little head between the door and the frame. He was fine at first and then a few hours later we noticed his right eye wasn't opening or barely was. This was at around midnight so there wasn't much we could do. This morning His eye is still somewhat shut but when he plays with out other ferrets he occasionally opens it all the way. But now I'm noticing that eye almost looks milky in the light. I tried seeing if the other eye was like that but it doesn't appear to be affected at all. There aren't any local vets open on Sundays and I work full time and most vets close before I get off work. I may not be able to bring him in until Saturday! Also, I'm really tight on money this month and I have absolutely no idea how much this id gonna cost. Especially if he needs x-rays. Does anybody have any advice for me or any idea how much this might cost me? I live in Massachusetts, if that helps provide any more info. I'm worried about him

I'm sorry- but this is something that really needs to be seen asap. Can your bf take him in since you can't? He could have a concussion or any number of things. It's also possible the eye itself has been damaged. In the interim, you can try a cold wet tea bag on it if he'll let you hold it in place. That will help take down some of the swelling, and the tannins will help with any irritation.

I agree with Sherry. This is something that can't wait. Your lil baby needs to be seen by a vet asap. This sounds like a crushing injury and many bad things can come out of crushing injuries. I crushed my finger once and not too badly but still had to undergo 2 months of physical therapy. The pain I was in/am still in is worse than you might think, and I'm sure if it was my head that got the contusion (crushing injury) it would be much much worse. If your babies eye is swollen and milky at the very least there is something really wrong with his eye and this alone needs to be seen soon or there is a chance the eye might be lost. And not to mention the possible skull fractures, brain bruises, internal bleeding that may have occured. Ferrets hide pain well so just because he seems normal does not mean he is not hurting. The possibilty of a negative outcome is just to great to let this go for another week. Is there anyone that can take your poor baby in to see the vet today or tomorrow?
Also, about the money issue. A lot of vets will help you out with deferments or allow payment plans in order to help you out with the cost. There are options out there and your ferrets health is so very important.

sounds like his eye has an ulcer ( damage/scratch). This will not heal without vet intervention. It is painful and he could lose it if not treated. He needs to be seen, if not today, tomorrow at the latest.

This wee one needs to see a vet ASAP. I'm sorry but the worst case scenario is that he's suffered a concussion and the bleeding is pressing on the optic nerve. There are too many other possibilities from minor eye damage, to fractured skull. Any of these could lead to thrombosis. ciao

Working at a vet clinic, eye stuff is almost always considered emergent. If there is any damage to the eye, if it is infected, etc (and if there is any damage it can quickly become infected - nice and moist area) and it is not treated ASAP, you can end up with an animal with permanent vision damage or worse.

Thank you all for your insight. My boyfriend managed to leave work early Wednesday and took Mico to the local small animal vet. The vet checked him out and luckily there wasn't any permanent damage. He's on the road to recovery and we just have to watch him closely. The vet says if he starts looking worse/or not getting better at al lto take him back asap. Thank you all for your helpful advice! I love my fur babies so much!
