I've tried the search function but as usual I can find anything. Looking at possibly adopting a ferret that is recovering from an ulcer. What do you do to help with recovery and to help prevent it from reoccurring?

I'm assuming that this ferret is already being or has been treated for ulcers? If it's been the first month of their meds and they're coming off the meds keep a close eye on them as it often recurs within a week or so of coming off their meds. I find the second set of medications seems to be the best fix. I've been giving my wee ones Olive oil. No proof that's the reason why I don't have any ulcer kids but I've found one of the biggest problems that seems to occur with adrenal is the ulcers. Touch wood...I've not had any this winter. The only difference that I can see is I'm now cutting my oil with Olive oil. I don't treat or feed any of my ulcer kids any different than my regular fuzzes. If the ulcer is active I do hand feed to make sure they're eating regularly as if they don't eat it makes the pain worse and they get nauseas. ciao

Thanks Heather. She is recoving from the ulcer and is not adrenal. I'm still waiting for more information on both on her and if her group will be joining us. I just like to be prepared. Just incase.

It's not uncommon for shelter ferrets to get ulcers. Stress causes the helicobacter bacteria to proliferate faster than the ferrets can deal with it. I only mentioned it with adrenal because I've got 4 adrenal fuzzes and it's very unusual not to have one of those wee ones being treated for ulcers. Fun-Go is also on pred which is another factor in setting a ferret up for ulcers. ciao

Years ago I had a ferret that was on Liquid carafate for about 2 months for his stomach ulcer.

I've been very, very lucky with my adrenal kids. The only one who's had an ulcer was Boris with his mouth/throat ulcers- and that was directly due to his pred.

Pred is brutal for ulcers, ferrets and human too. I'm sorry that Boris has had to fight mouth and throat ulcers as well as his IBD. It certainly can't help getting him to eat what he needs to. I know that I cringe every time that Fun-Go refuses his before pred meal. I know he eats on his own but he's one of these solitary eaters, it's rare that I ever see him eat. That meal that he gets (twice daily) is my guarantee that he's eating properly to cover not only his pred but his insulinoma ciao
