Making FN older and newer models work?

So as far as I understand, the older Ferret Nation (I have the 142) is NOT compatible with the new FN models (for example the 182).

Now, does this only apply to adding a newer FN level (i.e. the 181) ON TOP of the older FN (142)... or are they also not compatible side-to-side - like joining two cages to make a double wide?

I ask because I cannot find an old Ferret Nation anywhere here for the life of me and I can get the new one quite cheap from a petstore attached to my work where I get a discount. In fact, all of the FN 142's I can find in my area on Kijiji are wayyy more than this brand new 182.

So I guess, is there any way to make a double wide work with the newer and older models? Or to add a FN 181 level onto my FN 142? I know it wont be perfect... but I'm willing to twist-tie and modify the heck out of it. I just need to to know if it's plausible ;D

For a double wide it should work. One on top of the other, no, not compatible.
