Hi all! Well, my ferrets like various kinds of oils. They seem to enjoy light olive oil, grape seed oil, and SOME of my fuzzies like cod liver oil (but not Fenton!) However, I tried giving them some FerreTone for the first time, and they very obviously liked it WAY better than any of the oils I have given them! I really like how excited they get about the taste, and how much they enjoy it, but I don't want to use it much because of the preservatives! It smells like it has some kind of vanilla flavoring in it or something. Anyone have any good recipes for something similar that they would go nuts for like they do for FerreTone? I want a healthy treat they will love just as much, but I already know they don't love plain oil the same way!

I just looked up the ingredients. Wheat germ oil tastes nutty. So that is prob the vanilla taste? Soybean oil? I have no idea but most ferrets love linatone and that smells kind of vanilla-ish to me. I know cod liver oil definitely does not taste like vanilla! yuck.

Here's a recipe spiritualtramp over on Ferret Harmony uses: Many of us have our kids on natural diets, and try to keep any and all preservatives out of their foods and treats, so an important thing to think about is Ferretone! Ferretone contains BHT, a known carcinogen, and so in an effort to stray away from such things, I've developed my own recipe
I use:
8 oz fish oil (this can be found in liquid form, not just gelcaps. I usually find it in natural food stores or sometimes pharmacies.)
4 oz flaxseed oil
4 oz olive oil
a few teaspoons liquid vitamins
mix it all up and store in a light-proof container, in the fridge! My kids can't tell the difference from commercial 'tone, and it's easy to makeferretharmony.com/viewtopic.php?t=129Some, if I remember correctly, use a mix of EVOO, cod liver oil, and fish oil. I've found they also take well to a 1/2 and 1/2 mix of EVOO and tone. It cuts the tone at least

I mix a little salmon oil into some pumpkin. It's thick enough for nail trimming tummy licks without being runny.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere grapeseed oil isn't good for any kind of fuzzy.

8 oz fish oil (this can be found in liquid form, not just gelcaps. I usually find it in natural food stores or sometimes pharmacies.)
4 oz flaxseed oil
4 oz olive oil
a few teaspoons liquid vitamins ****************************************************** I use marine fish oil with a mixture of EVO or seal oil with EVO The mix is 1/3 EVO to 2/3 fish or seal oil. I don't use flaxseed, I've seen too many respond with itchies to it (ferrets are itchy enough without me adding oils that do that too). They really can't process it very well anyway as it's a veg. oil. I don't use grape seed oil as it too is a veg/fruit seed oil and a ferret really can't process this either (this is baring the fact that it's not good for them either). I don't use soya oils either, vegetable based and almost all soya is now created by GM plants anyway. I do use cod liver oil occasionally, especially if my guys don't get enough prey or liver. I never use more than once a week and never more than .05mls. As far as vitamin supplements, I don't use them. I use a variety of proteins to cover my bases....between commercial grinds, frankenprey and whole prey, this should be sufficient to cover their dietary needs. I would sooner use natural diets than artificial supplements ciao

In the GNC Wild Salmon Oil, they use sunflower oil as a preservative, while many others use rosemary extract. I've used both the GNC and rosemary preserved types and noticed no ill effects. From the reading I've done, sunflower oil seems to be the safest (preservative) and from others' comments, it gives their coat a nice glossy sheen. Any thoughts on using sunflower oil rather than the flaxseed oil?

I think I'd prefer using the sunflower oil, simply because some ferrets are more likely to have an allergic reaction to flaxseed. It can cause them to become exceedingly itchy. Much more so than is normal.

I had one poor wee boy who would not only itch himself out of his hammy....jump right out like he had fleas, but itched himself right off the shelf too. All he could do was scratch and spin (anyone who has ferrets knows what I'm talking about) It was painful to watch (made me itchy) ciao

Good luck with the Salmon oil! They'll love it. I wonder though if it will have the same impact that salmon flesh did on our young ones. They gobbled it up then had da runny STINKY poo. ;D By unanimous vote: Very rare treat in our house.
