Good luck with the Salmon oil! They'll love it. I wonder though if it will have the same impact that salmon flesh did on our young ones. They gobbled it up then had da runny STINKY poo. ;D By unanimous vote: Very rare treat in our house. Haha that's too funny! Well with my ferts, if I give them more than a few licks at a time, ANY oil I give them causes major runny poops, maybe not stinky though unless it's cod liver oil

Here's a question for you...
We know olive oil is a good hairball prevention and laxative tonic. We also know ferrets probably can't digest and utilize it nutritionally, but it may help keep their tummies healthy and hairball-free.
Fish oil on the other hand, they probably can digest and get nutrition from, right?
Would it make sense then to NOT mix them, and instead, give them separate?
My thinking is, if you mix fish oil with olive oil, will the ferrets still be able to absorb the fish oil and make use of it nutritionally, or will it just go through their system quicker like olive oil?
Your thoughts? The main reason I give olive oil daily is for hairball prevention, same as pumpkin, I know neither is likely to give them nutritional benefit. But I ordered some salmon oil and I bet they can digest that stuff, so maybe I should feed it separately...
Do you guys think the olive oil would hinder the absorption of the fish oil?

I feed mine together...the only reason because they won't eat the OO by itself. I use the OO for it's anti-inflammatory properties. I don't use it for a lax or semi lax. I use pumpkin for that....that and mice or whatever furry creature is on the menu ciao

Ok, the salmon oil arrived! None of my ferrets liked it by itself! When they tasted it, they shook their heads like it was nasty! I tried giving them a mixture of half salmon oil and half olive oil. Nope, still nasty, nobody liked it BUT then I added a tiny bit of Ferretone, to give it a familiar flavor. Now, everyone was willing to try a few licks, and especially Finn came back for more a few times! But they still acted like they weren't too happy with the taste lol... Could it be that they just need time to get used to the flavor?

Mine didn't take to it right off either. Took most of a bottle mixed with tone for them to accept it, so yes, they will in time.

I mentioned this in another thread, but I'll say it again here in case you missed it Extra virgin olive oil is supposed to prevent the bacteria that cause ulcers in ferrets.

Someone in a ferret group that I am in shared the following recipe....anybody ever try it? Is it safe for my girls?
50% Olive Oil 30% Flaxseed Oil 10% Evening Primrose Oil 10% Salmon Oil
I was able to find the flaxseed oil and I've purchased it...I had to order the primrose oil and salmon oil on Amazon.
Looking for the experts to let me know if it's safe.

I bought flaxseed oil and now I'm worried about using it due to possibly making my girls itchy. Bella already is itchy enough. Could I mix 50% EVOO with 50% Salmon oil? And how much of this could I give them daily?

I've read several people mix olive oil and salmon oil together, it should be perfectly fine. It should be limited the same as any other general-use oil, to 1 teaspoon per ferret per week. It's fine to break it up into smaller doses to give more than once per week if you don't exceed that limit, so daily it would be a somewhat small amount. It may be hard to measure 1/7 tsp since that's a strange amount, you could see if you can find a 1/8 tsp measuring spoon. It may also be possible to just use a certain number of drops of oil (supposedly 100ish drops is one teaspoon, so 10-15 drops of oil per day may be reasonable, just watch to make sure their droppings don't get too loose).

Either can be offered at full strength so I can't imagine it matters if they are in equal amounts, if they like both the same. If they are familiar with one, you could start with mostly that and work the other oil in a little at a time (ie. increase it by 10% amounts or something).
