bummer - Poor Boris, give him hugs from me. If the vet gives him pediapred (which is a children's form of prednisolone), he may not have problem with it since it's kind of sweet. Fingers crossed that Boris will accpt any meds he is given. I suspect the pred will help out a lot. Once Boris settles down, we can work toward slowy introducing some supplements again. To try to control anyI pred does not seem to be very effective (which is unusual but can happen), there's always imuran, which is stronger than pred and has fewer side effects in some ways. Imuran really squelches the immune response dramatically. I beleive it's used for organ transplants to mitigate the risk of rejection. The downside is that the patient becomes susceptible to infection. Most of the time, IBD can be dealt with using supplements only during earlier stages of the disease. My Schitzo boy had IBD that was controlled mostly with supplements. He did need occassional antibiotics/pred. to quiesce occassional flare-ups that were not responding to supplement. Schitzo eventually developed some thickening in the bowel. He did cross the bridge from lymphoma, but it was not the intestinal/IBD form. It was found only in the bone marrow - nowhere else. He lved to be over 6.5, and he had the IBD since he was a baby. He also had bilateral adrenal disease, insulinoma, anda pile of other oddities. There is no telling how a ferret will progress over time. Sendig good thughts to you and Boris. I know how difficult tis is,wnd having the vet cancel makes things even worse. I discovered reishi mushroom when I was waiting to bring Tomichi to the holistic vet. I thought she could be developing squamous cell carcinoma of the jaw (typically a death sentence). I could not sit back and do nothing, so I tried the reishi. I know how stinking helpless it feels when you have a sick fert and you can't get to the vet right NOW!! Hang in there and give Boris lots of hugs and kisses from me. I know exactly how Boris is from his behavior during the switch. -jennifer

Yeah, he's a pretty special boy I guess I just want this whole thing settled for him. His weight has dropped from about 1100 grams to 860 grams. He's rubbing his face on the carpet a lot from nausea, and he keeps his back hunched a lot, I'm assuming from cramping

Just to let you know- vet had to cancel the appt last night, so he's going in on Sunday now. It was so insane there on Thursday night! They had a C-section puppy emergency and then like 3 others at the same time. I wish they would have just cancelled my appointment too, I ended up waiting over an hour to see a vet (wasn't even Shelby) and then I had to wait another 30 mins for Shelby because the vet didn't know enough about ferrets to diagnose Olivia's coughing/vomitting. I think I was there like 3 hours total, it was insane. Poor Boris, I hope he feels better soon and that Dr. Kimura can help him on Sunday

It's not Dr. Kimura we are seeing then. Since it's just for a script for pred and carafate, one of the others will be doing it.

Just got back from the vet's. He's now on 3 different medications. Buprenorphine .03/ml 2 x a day for pain for 3 days. Ranitidine(Zantec) Suspension .15 2 x a day for 5 days to reduce stomach acids Pediapred 5mg/5ml once a day for 14 days. Meds all to be given 30 minutes apart. If these don't work, he goes on lupron. Vet thinks it's strictly IBD right now, so wants to treat for that before going to the next step. Fingers crossed this works. His cream treats are cut out entirely, as are any supplements until this course is finished. But he can have some KMR. The heavy cream I was using as a lure to get him rebonded with me, and to get him to eat some commercial raw will interfere with the meds working(since he's not processing fats well, the cream may negate the efficacy of the pred) Oh- and he's lost another 100 grams. He's now down to 760

Poor boy. Hopefully they've flavored the pain meds --they cover well. I also hope Boris likes the Pediapred. Paulie always came running for it and I would syringe it into a spoon (before I was good at not splashing the ferret with the syringe). *Crosses fingers* You need something to go a little easier with Boris.

He's just had his second dose of pain meds- same scenario. He get's the antacid in 30 minutes, and starts the pediapred tonight. While I certainly don't expect him to come running for it, I'm hoping it goes down a bit easier than the others. And no- only thing flavoured is the pred.

Good luck with the meds. I know how it gets.... I expect that the pred will help quite a bit. If you feel the need for giving a treat for bonding, a small lick of cream from the finger tip (just a taste) probably would not hurt as long as he does not get enough to get it into his tummy. I did that with Schitzo years ago, and it did not seem to interfere with the treatment. A tiny taste on the tongue is not the same thing as fats in the belly.
Keep us posted.

Ouch, because flavored pain meds were Paulie's favorite after surgery. Boris, be a good ferret, and actually like the pred. On the up side, if he is fighting his meds then he has plenty of fight in him. (Half full approach).

Agreed. And the pain meds are really making a difference for him He's not been rubbing his face along the carpet this morning, nor is he moving with that hunched up gait And as a result, he was eating well! Just to see that is worth any fight to get them into him. At least he's not fighting as MUCH as he did with the metro. Although the antacid seems to taste worse to him than the pain med

Well, I'd fight metro too! That stuff is clearly nasty. It is the only med Paulie got vocal about during his recovery back in 2008.

I'm so glad that you're seeing an improvement. Maybe, now the boy can start putting on some weight. I'm glad that the drugs aren't causing you the battle that the metro did (though I've used it a couple of times, it's horrible stuff) His healing candle is lit. Good luck wee boy, {{{cyberhugs}}} ciao
