Ive wanted to get a ferret for many years now. I work 6 to 2 so ill have plenty of playtime. I know what they require in the way cage and toys and all that fun stuff. But keeping him healthy is importent. Ive been doing as much research as possible but I'd like feedback from someone experienced. Alot of these questions I havnt been able to find answers to. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places.
Id prefer a male, any color. I plan on getting him from a breeder. I also plan on raw feeding. I know they like a playmate, but is that a good idea with him intact? Will they allow me one of their kits if hes only ever gonna be a pet? I dont like idea of having to pay more if I never want to have him fixed, but I never plan on breeding.
Ive read about the risk of adrenal. What are the pro and cons around keeping him intact? Should he still get the implant? What does that do? Is the vaccine I've read about Gonacon widely available? Whats its cost? Are there any others?
What about the number of hours in daylight? What does that affect? Why do some owners use black out covers? How does that change during the season?
Raw feeding. What excactly can i feed? Ive seen pig ears and tongues but those are huge. Is something like that only for soupy food, ground up? Are they considered just meat? Chicken feet. Too bony not enough meat? Too tough maybe? I want to shop smart and not buy anything he'll never eat or wont give him a balanced diet. Could someone give me an example of what you actually put in their bowl everyday? I know the percentage and everything but im super nervous about all this. Does raw feeding prevent insulinoma?
I plan doing this next year hopefully. Teach me to be a good ferret mommy!
