So I'm going to build my ferret a new cage with 5 levels. I was going to use an industrial shelving unit, and cover it in hardware cloth (wire spaced 1/2") and for the shelves/levels use the ones that come with the unit which are plastic, and line them with fake grass because the actual shelves are a bit slippery. But I've seen many people on here that have wire shelves with covers made out of blankets or fleece. In fact I see blankets literally everywhere in the cages! So should I do wire shelves instead with blanket covers to protect their feet? Would fake grass be dangerous? I realize if I use blanket covers I can wash them easier than plastic shelves or fake grass...

The fake grass would be very hard to clean and might just give them ideas that it's a good place to pee and poop on. I do not like wire flooring. It makes a mess of their feet I know that you can cover it but they like to move their blankets and burrow, sometimes putting them in contact with the wire. I used tiles glued to the floor and still use blankets for them to burrow in. I noticed that Bacchus had taken all his blankets and piled them in the corner and made a nest, either that or he's dropping the hint that laundry needs to be done. ciao
