Hi All,
About three weeks ago, my big boy Eddie developed a cough. I took him to the vet and she gave him a good going over. His gums and nose were healthy pink, etc., etc. I let her know that his poopies were fine and that he is still playing with his friends and is as ornery as ever - just the cough. She gave me a round of antibiotics to give him and said that if it didn't clear up, that I should bring him back for a chest x-ray. We're about half way through the course. His cough is now gone but now it's turned into a wheeze. It doesn't happen when he's out spazzing around with everyone else and only seems to happen when he's sleeping or resting.
Here's my thought.....Before I was diagnosed with asthma I would wake myself up at night coughing. My human doctor told me that this is a very common symptom.
Because Eddie seems to be healthy otherwise, do you all think asthma may be a possibility for him too? I'll be taking him back to the vet when we're through the antibiotics even if things clear up - I'm over protective that way. My vet's experienced with ferts, but I want to make sure I have as much info as possible before I go.
I've been lurking/posting for a bit over a year now and have never seen this come up. Does anyone have any info they can share?
Thanks so much,
Suzie

All I can help you with is to check for detergents, litter dust/perfumes, candles, and wall plugins. The only time my ferret had a serious cough was my 2 year old, and he could not jump around and play. He had lung cancer. He was 2. I have no experience with wheezing ferrets. I am going to get rid of the litter that I am using because it is tracking and do not want it to get in food or for them to inhale tiny particles. Does he root around in litter? Here is something. en.allexperts.com/q/Ferrets-2277/2010/11/Ferret-asthma.htm

Thanks so much for your reply! It helped a lot. There are only two new things I've done. I got a Feliway plug-in for my new kitty - it's all the way on the other side of the house. I did change detergents but I went from one unscented to another. Looks like I'm going to take a giant load of clean fert bedding to the laundromat this weekend to see if that helps. I'll let you know if things clear up. Suzie

If you are half-way through the course of meds and it is improving then it is probably bacteriological and not asthma.

Sounds like it's clearing up, the meds are doing their job.
The only time I've ever dealt with asthma in a ferret was a ferret that was full of cancerous tumors. Giving him his inhaler was a huge pain.

If the meds help it may have been a bacterial respiratory infection, or a viral infection that's getting better on its own independently of the meds. If it doesn't get better with the meds I'd suspect viral or cardiac causes. How old is your boy?
