It's been a whirlwind the past two days. Lou is still with us and seems to be gaining weight, if slowly. After 24 hours of syringe feeding and tricking him into eating by coating food in furo-vite (it still pains me to type that word, I hate using it but it was all he would eat), he began to show interest in food again. I spent another 12 hours or so syringe feeding some more, and then he became bored with the slowness of the syringe and went over to his bowl and took a big bite! For the past 12 hours or so he's been eating out of the bowl on his own. My boyfriend and I think he had given up and decided to stop eating, but I'm so happy I was able to convince him it's worth sticking around a while longer.
That being said, he is still not doing well. My local vet agreed with me when I asked to wait on the tests, I don't want to take any more blood from him when he's so skinny. When he gains a bit of weight we'll consider doing the ADV test, although all it would do is prepare us for our other ferret potentially getting it since there is no cure.
After the weekend I'll reevaluate how Lou is doing and decide if we should start on the antibiotics and steroids he was prescribed. Because he seemed to have given up I did not fill the prescription before the weekend, but now that he's pulling through I'm not sure.
Henrika - I had mentioned a possible taurine deficiency the first two times I took him to the vet for those very reasons, but after bloodwork I was assured that his taurine levels are normal.
Sherry and Abby - Do you think it is worth getting the test done? Even if it is not very expensive, would it do anything to solve future problems? As far as I'm aware, there's no way to prevent ADV in other ferrets.
