Offal refers to the organs and entrails of an animal. Organs like kidney liver and heart play an important part of their diet but in limited quanities. Liver is high in Vitamin A and remains in their system. It is fat soluable. That means it can build up to levels that are too high. On the Frankenprey diet, liver is kept to five percent of what they eat in one week.
Kidney is an organ and considered the Other Organ. It's a hormone secreting organ and any Other Organ including kidney is also limited to five percent of what they would eat in one week.
Heart is full of Taurine and essential for a Ferret. We consider Heart a Muscle meat and it will be ten percent of what they eat in one week.
Oxtail is full of marrow but ferrets really can not eat that big a bone. They could chew the meat off of it and the marrow is wonderful for them. You would put that into the Muscle meat category.
If you decide to feed whole prey or combine whole prey with Frankenprey, then we would adjust your menu to include whole prey without overdoing organs. That simply means subtracting whole prey meals from frankenprey meals and basing your organ percentages on the remaining frankenprey meals.
Does that help?

so once i get my ferret can you guys make a menu? What we prefer to do is to teach you how to make a menu. That way you know what you're feeding and why. Say for example, you can't find any hearts. You need to know that you could substitute tongue and you need to know how important the taurine found in heart or tongue is for a ferret. We will happily help you tweak a menu and make suggestions. Building a menu is not difficult. The idea is to have: 7-9 Bone In meats 3-4 Muscle meats 1 organ meal of Liver plus another Organ 1 organ meal of 1/4 portion of Liver plus 1/4 portion of another Organ and a half portion of Heart. You want a minimum of 3 animal sources. The more the better. Different animals offer different nutrients. One red meat meal a week will provide Iron and Vitamin B for example. Read through this thread and it will help explain how to build a menu. docs.google.com/document/d/1ysfT1bIvXixXYv6QFjW_EZZqHymtRXRTc3E_wAxLbxU/edit?pli=1Once you bring your ferret or ferrets home, start a switching thread and post about your progress. The Mentors will all offer advice and support. We will make sure that you have a menu that is balanced and that you understand what makes a balanced menu. If you are over 18, then you can sign up for the mentoring program and you will be assigned your own Mentor to work with.

The bones in chicken and turkey legs may be hard for ferrets to eat. Usually the wings/necks/backs of those animals are about the toughest I've seen recommended.

It will be easier to keep track of what has been said. Would you like me to do that for you? One thing to remember about this menu is that a day old chick is a treat not a meal. Only adult animals will provide proper nutrients. Chicks and pinkies are simply treats.

@norman300 This will be your thread to ask questions on raw feeding. I'll also move some of your questions over here. This will show up under New Topics and is on the Newbie Diet Questions board under Natural Diet.

New updated menu this is mostly the same as the other one just a few changes to make a little bit better maybe: Monday am: Chicken wingMonday pm: Quail2 Bone In meals and 2 proteins. Very nice.
Tuesday am: Duck necksTuesday pm: Minced Beef1 Bone in meal 1 Muscle meat meal of beef. Terrific. The necks will be tough as we mentioned before. You'll want to smash those at first.
Wednesday am: Chicken necksWednesday pm: Beef heart1 Bone In meal 1 Heart meal (muscle meat) very good.
Thursday am: Ox kidneyThursday pm: Chicken wingThis a.m. meal has an Organ by itself. I would suggest that since you already have your organ meals later in the week, look for another animal source. You don't want to overdue the organ meals. Liver should be five percent and so should any other organ.
The p.m. meal looks good
Friday am: QuailFriday pm: ½ chicken heart + ¼ lamb liver + ¼ lamb kidney Excellent for both meals.
Saturday am: Chicken wingSaturday pm: Diced pork
Very good on both meals.
Sunday am: Chicken wingSunday am: ½ lamb liver + ½ lamb kidneyVery nice. I count 8 bone in meals 4 muscle meat meals once you replace that lonely kidney with another animal source, either bone in or muscle meat. Your organ meals are both correct. You have chicken/quail/duck/beef/lamb and pork for variety. What I would suggest is to replace your single Kidney meal on Thursday with gizzards. Look for duck gizzards. They are a great way to get pricey duck proteins for low costs. It will also give you another animal source. This menu looks very good. Nice Job! What I'd like to do next to to offer up a few lessons on nutrients to help you understand some more basics on feeding. You're doing well with your menu planning, now let's talk about why we want your menus balanced and why a variety is important. When you get a chance then please read this. I love giving pop quizzes so perhaps you will find one in your next reply. (giggle) docs.google.com/document/d/1MwRqCyh9CAT5vAdKWAAHarmm8Cm-etgZsdakU2UIyyU/edit?pli=1#Very Nice Job Norman, you're working hard at this. (dance)
