Ok everyone, I've got a serious question. Would it be better to keep my bayer contour next ez meter and calibrate it with the vet's meter or buy the alphatrak 2 meter? The reason I'm asking is because I can get the strips for my meter 100 count a lot cheaper than I can for the alphatrak 2 50 count strips. I do have almost enough saved up to buy the alphatrak 2, but I'm just wondering which would be the better option. How many of you use regular meters and how many use the alphatrak 2, or know people that use one or the other ? Sherry Desiree @julesalot FireAngel unclejoe @@poncesmom Heather

I don't use the alphatrak. I use a true2go meter from walgreens and calibrated it to my vets. It was way cheaper. I like my little meter, it's compact, easy to use and the strips are cheap.

How often do you calibrate yours? I'm thinking of just using my bayer contour next ez meter, because I can get 100 strips for $25-30. The 50 count for the alphatrak is at least $60 and that's pretty steep. I really like my meter as well and I got a heb brand in control lancing device, it has 7 different depths and 3 different poking speeds. So much easier to get blood than with the lancing device that came with my meter.

Sherry Desiree @julesalot FireAngel unclejoe @@poncesmom Heather I'm using @julesalot 's meter for Caillou. It comes from Walgreens and is the True Test and she sent the Advanced Travel Lancets also. It works fine. The Alphatrak 2 is about $150. I don't think you need that. My Mother in Law is a diabetic and she uses a Walgreen meter also.

I use the Walmart Relion meter. As long as you calibrate from time to time with the vet there should be no issue

If I bring Rebel in for a check up, I bring my meter to double check it. It's been the same points off the last two times.

Like Desiree, We use the Tru2Go from Walgreens. It's $10 with 10 strips. Our original was within .1 mg/dL with our vet. We re-calibrate the meter every 4-5 bottles of strips. So far our first meter's battery is still good after 3 years, and still reads good. We don't buy the refill strips, which are a bit cheaper, (~$34/50) because there's a good chance they'd expire before we used half of them. And we always keep the newest meter as a backup. All meters come with a small bottle of calibration solution. You have to waste a test strip on it, but we will buy a new meter just for the test strips, otherwise you have to buy at least 50. When we start an insulinomic fert on pred, we try to check BG after 4-5 days, then after 2 and 4 weeks, then every 1-2 months, unless clinical signs require. Getting blood is always more traumatic for us than for the fuzz.

@poncesmom I have found the alphatrak 2 for $60 at most, but my meter works perfectly (just requires more blood than the alpha) and the strips are TONS cheaper. I just purchased a 100 count of them that dont expire until 2017, so I'm good for a while. Sherry Desiree It's good to know everyone I've asked on here uses the human meters, the rescue suggested I get the alphatrak, but I've got the hang of doing the test with the human meter and the alphatrak's stuff is expensive. unclejoe So, you recalibrate after every 40-50 test strips? I've got 25 as of right now, just ordered 100 more, so I'll be recalibrating after the 40 or 50, it's only $18 for a glucose test at my vet. It's good to know you use a human meter as well, the rescue Mako is from wanted me to get the alphatrak, but the things for it are expensive. *** I would also like to let everyone know as of 4:16 today, Mako's glucose is up to 81! This is so much better, it's continuing to rise! He's on .6ccs of pred AND .5ccs of the diazoxide and he's doing tons better after the diazoxide was upped. My boyfriend likes to call him Sir Mako, so he bought a top hat. Here he is wearing it right after I woke him up. ❤

My insu guys go for rechecks every 6 months. I recalibrate then.

My insu guys go for rechecks every 6 months. I recalibrate then. I'll do the same with Mako, unless the flora doesn't help him gain weight. Then he'll be having another vet visit very soon to find out the cause. Other than that, he's doing well and getting plenty of food. ❤

Ok, one last question everyone. How often do you change the lancets? I've got a box of 100 brand new ones(they are 28g) when I bought my new lancing device. Sherry Desiree unclejoe @poncesmom

I use them until you start to feel some resistance poking.
