Please confirm that you are 18 years of age or older:
Yes.
1. Where did you first learn about natural diets for ferrets?
Read about it while researching online before and after getting the ferrets and quickly found this site.
2. Please describe the type of diet you would like assistance in switching your ferret(s) to. Be sure to include if you are interested in feeding whole prey (live or frozen-thawed) and if you are wanting to FULLY switch to a natural diet or PARTIALLY. If you are unsure what kind of diet you want to put your ferrets on, please express that and we can help you find the best type of natural diet for your ferret.
I would like to switch my ferrets to a frankenprey menu with the occasional whole prey. Both live and frozen whole prey.
3. Why are you interested in switching your ferrets to a natural diet?
To give them a natural diet that is good for them that they can thrive on.
4. Do you understand that switching your ferret to a natural diet can be a lengthy, arduous process? Its not an overnight switch. It requires a commitment of several months at minimum. Your HF Mentor will be more then happy to assist you in switching your ferret(s) to a natural diet, but you need to be equally as committed. The switch takes time and effort every single day. It can also be extremely frustrating at times. If you aren't willing to tough out a potentially lengthy switching process, you have major life changes approaching (baby on the way, moving, starting school, getting married/divorced, etc), or limited time due to work, then it might be a better idea to wait on switching your ferret's diet until you have more time. Are you willing and realistically able to make the neccessary time commitment?
Yes.
5. How many ferrets do you currently have? What are their names? Ages? Genders? Do they have any health problems? Are they overweight? Underweight? How long have you had each ferret for?
I have 2 ferrets, one named Nibbler and one name Pazuzu. Both are male and about 2 months old according to the paperwork that Petco gave me. They are currently with Petco so that they can be taken to the Vet, When I purchased the first one a week ago it was the only one so we thought how small it was and how much it slept was normal. (Almost had to force it to be awake.) And when it was awake it was not very active, he would wonder around the room but really wouldn't play. A few days ago I went back and saw they had gotten another one in and we wanted 2 so I purchased it aswell. I got home and we quickly realised that Nibbler (Our first ferret) was much smaller and the new ferret (Pazuzu) was much more active. Pazuzu would play and be awake more and would also eat more. Which led me up to taking them back to Petco so that they can see a Vet, since it has been less than 30 days Petco pays to take them to the Vet. Bad part is I have to do without them for a couple of days. I am not really worried about Pazuzu since he seems to have a fuller form and is much more active but since they were together for a couple of days I figured I would send both just in case.
6. What diet do you currently feed your ferrets? (Please include all treats, supplements, etc) Do they already eat some form of soup?
They are currently on kibble, I mix 50/50 of Ultra Blend Select (This is what I was told they were fed at store) and Epigen 90 for digestive support. I also have some Bandits treats but will probably start making our own or switching to freeze dried liver/kidneys etc. My ferrets do not seem to enjoy the Bandits treats. I also have given them Chew treats. The day I got Pazuzu I decided to try live feeding aswell, so when I got Pazuzu I also got 2 mice. Pazuzu went straight for it, and managed to kill the mouse in about 1 minute and 20 second. (Sorry if you feel I let it go on too long.) Pazuzu also immediately started to eat the mouse and ate about 3/4 just leaving the hind section and tail. Nibbler seemed to be interested but would not go at it with enough energy, he managed to pick it up and attempt to take it out of the box we had them him so I decided to do the cervical dislocation method found on this site. After it was dead Nibbler would bite and smell it but I do not think he was a fan of the fur because I gave him what was left of Pazuzu's mouse and he gobbled it right up. I then put the other mouse in the cage and they both ate it, mainly Pazuzu.
7. Have you ever tried to switch your ferrets to a natural diet in the past? If yes, what happened?
No.
8. What additional information about yourself or your ferrets would you like to share?
I recently got married, May 2nd 2015. My wife wanted a pet since we first started dating. She kept attempting to convince me to let her get a cat and I am not having any of that so I told her we could get ferrets and here we are. I am also a crazed Futurama fan and that is where the ferrets names come from.
9. How often during the week do you have access to a computer?
Everyday and I can access this website on my phone easily.
10. Please post a picture of each of your ferrets (if possible).
I will post pictures as soon as I get them back!
11. Have you met the requirements for this program? Are you at least 18 years of age? Do you have your scale, a place to access meats, hearts, livers, etc?
I am 21, I have a scale that weighs in ounces but I will get one that weigh in grams if needed. I have about 5 stores around me that sell what I would need. 3 of which have everything I would ever need such as most organs from cows, pigs and chickens and the harder to find cuts of meat. Then the other 2 sell chicken hearts, gizzards and livers, and what your normal grocery store would have.
This is what I currently have on hand:
Beef Spleen
Beef Heart
Pork Liver
Pork Tails
Chicken Hearts
Chicken Gizzards
Chicken Livers
Chicken Breast
Turkey necks
I plan on picking up some cornish hens by the start I start feeding raw. The 2 asain markets I have will allow me to put in a good amount of variety I just got some of these items to get a starting menu. The stores also carry things such as brains, kidneys and some others I cannot remember. Unfortunately I can't seem to find anyplace to buy wing tips.
Here is a link to my unofficial switching thread. I will be changing the menu due to the advice I received there. Feel free to share your wisdom on that thread until I get 15 post.
