Hello Everyone
My name is Jade, and I have 2 ferrets, one of which I need some help switching.
1. Where did you first learn about natural diets for ferrets?
From a Facebook group, and online (searching)
2. Please describe the type of diet you would like assistance in switching your ferret(s) to. Be sure to include if you are interested in feeding whole prey (live or frozen-thawed) and if you are wanting to FULLY switch to a natural diet or PARTIALLY. If you are unsure what kind of diet you want to put your ferrets on, please express that and we can help you find the best type of natural diet for your ferret.
When I got Floki (1 year) he came with some food, not sure of the brand (small pellet type food, probably just ferret food from any pet store) I now have him eating Wysong Epigen 90 but would like to do a complete holistic diet for both of them. Freya (3 months) was on that similar (I'm assuming Marshalls) ferret food, she has taken to eating whole prey and raw quite well She is also eating the Wysong at will. But she does prefer the raw which is great
3. Why are you interested in switching your ferrets to a natural diet?
I'm interested in switching my ferrets because I want them to have the longest and healthiest life possible.
4. Do you understand that switching your ferret to a natural diet can be a lengthy, arduous process? Its not an overnight switch. It requires a commitment of several months at minimum. Your HF Mentor will be more then happy to assist you in switching your ferret(s) to a natural diet, but you need to be equally as committed. The switch takes time and effort every single day. It can also be extremely frustrating at times. If you aren't willing to tough out a potentially lengthy switching process, you have major life changes approaching (baby on the way, moving, starting school, getting married/divorced, etc), or limited time due to work, then it might be a better idea to wait on switching your ferret's diet until you have more time. Are you willing and realistically able to make the neccessary time commitment?
Yes.
5. How many ferrets do you currently have? What are their names? Ages? Genders? Do they have any health problems? Are they overweight? Underweight? How long have you had each ferret for?
I have 2, Floki who is a 1 yr old male, no known health issues,I feel he is a little underweight, I got him off Kijiji about 3 months ago, and Freya who is a 3 month old girl, with no known health issues, she is plump but not over weight, I've had her for about a month and got her from a pet store.
6. What diet do you currently feed your ferrets? (Please include all treats, supplements, etc) Do they already eat some form of soup?
Main food (recently switched from cheap kibble) now eating Wysong Epigen 90
Treats- Marshall Bandit treats (banana and peanut butter flavors)
Some Raw (recently introduced to both) Mice, Rats, Raw chicken heart and liver, Raw ground beef, and Raw egg yolks once a week)
7. Have you ever tried to switch your ferrets to a natural diet in the past? If yes, what happened?
I don't believe Floki was ever offered more than cheap kibble and he is proving to be difficult to introduce meat to, I didn't try to switch completely, but gave him mice and raw meats, he doesn't really know what to do with the mice/ rats, chews them a little but doesn't really eat them, he likes chicken though, but still doesn't eat much either.. He definitely prefers kibble for now.. Freya on the other hand would go completely raw today, she loves the meat/ whole prey and usually finishes what Floki won't.
8. What additional information about yourself or your ferrets would you like to share?
I had previously owned 3 ferrets but unfortunately at the time I didn't know much about feeding them and only gave them the cheaper ferret food from pet stores :/ I had them for about 3 years and they seemed healthy enough, but learning about the holistic diet I wish I had fed them that way. Floki is rather timid for a ferret, he only plays with me and when he feels like it, Freya is a ball of energy and always wants to play. I love ferrets always have and always will I plan on getting more when I have the space and extra time
9. How often during the week do you have access to a computer?
Everyday.
10. Please post a picture of each of your ferrets (if possible).
All my pics are on my phone, but I will post one in my profile soon.
11. Have you met the requirements for this program? Are you at least 18 years of age? Do you have your scale, a place to access meats, hearts, livers, etc?
Need to get a scale but I have everything else
