I had a "dalmation" type ferret.....we call them Mutt's here or holsteins but the shows refer to the colouring as a mutt. I've had one, his health was poor from the get go and he lived to be about 3 yrs old. He was deaf, had constant stomach issues and died of lymphosarcoma. He was a rescue but under a year when I got him and had not had a hard life. ciao They sound beautiful. I kind of suspected that a dalmation type ferret would come with some kind of health problem. They sound quite rare(they're probably non-existent here), Are they rarely bred because of the health issues? ;o;

I think they're an accident, a total botch. It just looked like a badly matched silver or platinum....Anything that is bred from the normal is going to have health issues because they're a mistake. Ferrets come in two standard colours. Albino and sable/poley....anything that happens after that is a genetic anomaly. So, if you breed a mess to a mess you're going to get a mess. It may be cute but it's still a mess. It's really simple and rather sad because we choose to ignore what is normal and try and meddle with nature and create flukes and consider them "special" and try and repeat the process. It's like breeding for DEWs. When I first got into ferrets you did not breed for DEWs. They carry a fatal gene...you never got DEW kits, you got silvers that by the time they were 3 or so became DEWs, roaned out. Now you can get DEW kits. According to genetic statistics 30% of the litter that has been bred to create DEWs dies...how many little one have to die so someone can have a DEW kit? What are the ferrets people are attracted to....think about it.....Pandas, DEWs, Mutts, Silvers....they like the different the oddities. Then they complain when their ferrets get odd and exotic cancers. That's genetics ciao

I agree with you Heather. When it comes to ferts, I always choose the ones that are more normal looking. My boy Poco has only recently started to DEW and he is 2 yrs and 3 months old. Before that he was a silver roan and I wouldn't have him if the pet store hadn't begged me to take him off their hands. He was 6 or 7 months old already, the largest in the tank and a biter to boot. He is the best little guy but he does have an attitude! I love him to bits, but wouldn't have been the first choice. I like the cinnamons and sables!

They're quite pretty since they're rare (well where I am that is), but it always comes with a price. I honestly wouldn't even have thought of that, so you can really imagine how so many people aren't even aware of such information. I remember reading up about the genetics issues among DEW, Pandas and what not. Its quite interesting, but for the animals its really not fair in the long run. I can't believe that 30%. It sounds really legit too. Thats really sad. Its better to not breed at all if they were going to risk little lives. They have a short life already, so Its not worth it if they turn out to die before they even get a chance at life. ;n; Waardenburg's Syndrome would also come from genetics also, wouldn't it? (I had no idea what it was before I got ferrets.) I was going to get a panda before I ended up with Haru & Yuki, and even then I was completely in the dark when it came to genetics.

Genetics is interesting and that's all it started out to be for me, interesting. What's unfortunate and just a bit sad is that now that I know a little bit, I can see that so much that is wrong with our ferrets comes from ignoring genetics and playing creator. We ignore the basics when breeding for markings and colours. Those that breed rats, dogs, cats who really know what they're doing will tell you the more white the more health issues you create. ciao

I would like somebody to hold those scientist down and inject them with some glow in the dark genes.That is so terrible. >

I saw something like that to show a clone. It was used as a gene alter, so no one could not recognize the clones. They had claws that glowed under black light. ciao
