I have two ferrets and I currently have a rice dig box. I use the pine nuggets in their litter box, which they use 70 percent of the time. But they have also been using the rice box probably 10 percent of the time. I had recently bought a bag of layer/ chicken feed for my cat to use in her litter pan... and got to thinking this is a whole lot of chicken feed, and with this amount it would make an awesome dig box... way cheaper than the rice...but would it be safe as a dig box material? I have found comments where people were using it as litter around ferrets? So I think it would be safe, but I wanted some opinions before I tried it.... thanks

I would use it as litter. It is quite dusty so might not be the best thing for them to dig in.

Agreed. I use it as litter but it is awfully dusty and it tracks everywhere. In dig boxes, ferrets tend to bury their heads in the substrate so I would opt for rice, uncooked beans, or plastic balls.

I use macaroni in their dig box. They love it. It makes noise (which they seem to enjoy immensely)and it allows them to dig, they're not as prone to use it as a litter box either ciao

I agree that the chicken feed is going to be way too dusty to use for a dig box for your little one. Have you tried using biodegradable packing peanuts or pasta?
