I have been checking my ferrets tummy and the last couple days I feel a little mass pretty low down on his tummy. Lower right in the front. Is this a lump a should be concerned about? Should I start blockage protocol? I don't want to do that unless I need to.

Have you noticed any other signs with him? Straining to go potty? Skinny poops, refusing to eat? How is his energy levels? Have you looked around to see if there is anything around that he could have chewed and swallowed? I don't have alot of medical knowledge, so until someone like Sherry or Heather answer, I'll keep an eye out on this thread and keep it bumped up front. Give the little guy a hug and I hope all turns out okay.

His energy level seems a little low....not straining to poop but I'm not having to clean his cage much. He is pooping every time he comes out but they are thin. I'm thinking hair ball, he's shedding and he's been grooming a lot. I gave him pumpkin last night and he had a nice big pumpkin poo but only one and then back to skinny poop. I can feel when he has a full tummy. And an empty tummy. But there is just one spot that concerns me.

Hi the best advice I can give you is pop into your vet ask them to take a look and also to show you where and what you can look out for a spleen or a kidney can feel like a mass to those who have never palpated a ferret before its hard to explain hands on is better take care bye for now Bev

I'd definitely continue the blockage protocol. It's a bit odd that the pumpkin came through by itself, but it does sound like it could be a partial blockage. Are you missing any foam earplugs? #1 cause of blockages

If you can feel a hard mass and he's still passing stools but is showing to be lethargic I would be vetting. I would start with just a vet doing a complete feel over and depending on that outcome, getting either an xray of the area or if the vet suspects digestive issues a barium. I've had a couple of ferrets that have had masses that cause the symptoms you're describing. As you're little one passed all the pumpkin without trouble I would be offering some egg over the weekend (to see if it is hair) and vetting at the beginning of the week. Any mass that can be felt on a ferret should be investigated by a vet ciao

I have to say that our vet was able to palpate enlarged lymph nodes near the scapula that I could not. After she pointed them out, I found them, but they are still pretty small. She has seen some ferrets, and kept some as part of her research in vet school, so even though she doesn't see them every day she knows what she's looking for. I can feel most of the larger organs, and a blockage would be easy to find. That's why I suspect that's what you have. Best wishes that the pumpkin and egg do the job.
I like to feel up all of our ferts whenever I do their nails, teeth or whatever. It's changes that you notice. With ferrets, if you notice a change in one you can compare it to any others in the house.

Ok, he just pooped. It was pretty seedy. But regular size around except at the end it was really thin. When I pulled it apart to see if anything came out it was stringy?

It sounds like its ingested hair or he has swallowed something he should not if you still have it I know this sounds yucky but place it in a small bowl of water and stir it around so you can get a good look at the stringy bits is it hair ? take care bye for now Bev
