glad he didn't eat the tape! It is all trial and error, your doing a fabulous job with him. Just remember one day at a time. What kind of flooring did you get?

How is your baby? I had a ferret with this problem and I placed blankets, soft towel, etc. down the hall and into the living room so he would not rub on the tile. We kept close check on his urine for a uti.

Sorry I must have accidentally deleted this from my bookmarks. Just thought I'd update and here are posts that I haven't seen. marcia, our biggest problem is him getting carpet burns and rubbing the skin off his penis from the carpet, blankets, towels etc. So tiles and lino are better. I'm interested to know how you went on with yours though. Any hints, tips or stories would be great. Thanks Thanks for the thoughts. Mako still isn't great in his chair, he's learnt to ram into walls to try flip it and then wiggles like crazy until he's twisted in his harness then I have to get him out. He's great if I'm right there with him but we're taking a break and going back to introducing it. It should be a good thing not something to escape from. I took it nice and slow and he seemed to be doing well, even if it was a slow process. Not sure where we went wrong. He is still really sore and because of all the rubbing he has a large open wound where the tiny whole should be to pass urine. This has caused his urine steam to become extremely small and has created almost a reservoir or second bladder. This makes an infection more likely and more serious. The vets have talked and they think his only chance is to rewire his water works so he passes urine like a female would, or for those flinching at that idea, a male cat. This will mean while he is healing he will have to be bandaged or carried around. Luckily I'm at home and not much planned other than a few appointments so I can do lots of carrying around during the day, bandages at night and hope they stay on. If this doesn't work we might have to call it the end of the road for Mako. Oops forgot to add, from waist up you can't tell anything is wrong. He is full of life, healthy, happy, never stops eating, plays, loves cuddles, gives kisses and is a wonderful little chap.

If you can afford it, then the surgery should make his life easier. Here is hoping he can get used to his little wheel chair as well. Maybe have him in a long hallway(or open room) and put drops of oil on the floor a few inches apart to keep his attention on that? Just so he associates the w/c with positive things

Aww poor little guy I hope they can work out his bits for him maybe you could use a small nappy ( like you can buy for puppy's or bitches in season for him to wear under the bandages it could add a little padding and catch any leaks and hey so what if he ends up peeing like a jill as long as he pees there is no infections and his sores heal he will still be my hero and the boards hells angel ferret nothing girly about those tough guys !!! give him a great big smooch from me take care bye for now Bev

Hi. How old is Mako? My ferret had problems toward the end of his life so did not have a lot of strength is the hind legs at times. I checked him often for UTI. I also rubbed a little Neosporin ointment on sore. He did not lick it off because of taste. Or maybe just some Vaseline. I would wipe him with a mild baby wipe of rinse the area with cool water in the sink and pat dry. I tried to keep him clean and the area covered with ointment or Vaseline.

Thank you all for your replies. I'm so glad that you think I should give this a shot, others have said he might be best to be PTS but he's still got so much spark left in him.
Sherry I have been using freeze dried treats and he will eat those and walk sensibly. I'm going back to just doing that and having him walk onto the chair rather than wrestle to get him fastened in. I must have pushed to hard to fast, so going to take it nice and easy. We are going to try the operation, he's booked in for Wednesday next week. They needed a longer surgery slot and that was the next available none emergency one. Estimated cost is £400 - £500 so while it's not cheap it is worth it to give him a try.
Bev you always make me smile! And I can't tell you how much that means at the moment. I wish Mako's situation was the only thing going wrong at the moment but it's just one of many. He is my little rebel boy, I still need to make him a little biker jacket. Going to get some stickers for his chair too, haha He used to be such a daddy boy, loving the wrestling and bouncing around as soon as he heard my OH come home from work. Now he still does that but after a play he comes to find Mummy for cuddles and kisses. Daddy is just for playing! haha He's getting fed up with all the smooches! He's learnt to roll over in my arms and use his front paws to push my face away. Of course I can't help but laugh and try even harder to kiss him all over. He sometimes laughs when I get his belly and then the dooking and wrestling begins. Such a goof. My sister mentioned I should take a few 'before' pictures so that when I take him to local shows in the future I can prove he is a boy! Or I should just give up and give him a girls name instead... I like you, don't think Mako will care in the slightest. As long as he can pee, not have open wounds and play he's happy. Oh and eat, lots of eating!
He's not that old, he's a rescue but we think he's about 3. I've tried sudocrem which most ferrets aren't supposed to like and while Mako will leave it alone, Bolin his BFF will clean him up regardless of what I put on him. He doesn't have control over his bowels either so just goes when and where ever he is. He ends up needing a shower or bath every few days, and he has a quick rinse after emptying his bladder as he often ends up with some on him and I don't want him getting sore. I rarely use anything other than plain water though as I don't want to irritate his skin.

Hi if there was ever an award for bravery for ferrets he deserves it I as a judge would give him a red ribbon for sheer guts and determination ! you deserve one too ! once the waterworks and everything are sorted I am sure he will be hot rodding it around your house and causing all kinds of trouble I think bolin realises his buddy needs help keeping clean so he is his four footed nursemaid only trouble is his tongue is like sandpaper ! and no mako wont care in the slightest what anyone thinks he has a mum and dad who loves him that's all that counts many years ago I wrote a poem about ferret shows and I think this is what mako would think lol now I am no real poet but I want to share it with you THE FERRET SHOW My owner sits down with her magazine, Her eyes light up with a wicked gleem, Oh no not that my brain does say, She's found a ferret show ad today, Sure enough she scoops me up, She shakes her head and begins to tut, Then she gives me a gentle pat, Oh no not that it means a bath!, Into the suds she plunges me, While she coo's as sweet as can be, Next its the towels the massage rub, I must confess this does feel good, Next its the hissing hairdryer thing, She turns it down so I dont singe, My coat looks like a powder puff, Man or Man I do feel rough, I certainly dont want to strut my stuff! All of my street creds been erased, For the sake of an ad on a magazine page, Next she grabs the cotton buds, Cleaning out my ear flap crud, Then the clippers go clip, clip, clip, And my super sharp nails vanish in a snip, Next my teeth get the dreaded toothpaste, man oh man what a terrible taste, Next she surveys her handywork, And on her face comes a great big smirk, Shes happy with her pre show work, But Ive a surprise in store for her, This guy aint standing purfumed fur, My male glands go into over time, AHH thats better this smells all mine, I dont need no ferret shows, For I am her champion dont she know, Win or loose in the ferret show game, She will love me tomorrow just the same, Whats a ribbon hanging on her wall, I have her heart the best prize of all!
and that's what he has your heart and love that's all he needs kiss him from me take care bye for now Bev

What a beautiful poem. Bless you and Mako and for trying so hard to give him the best life. I have spent thousands of dollars on my past seven ferrets because they are my babies. I will do the same for my new little Teddy. You are in my thoughts and prayers and please keep me posted on his progress.

Bev what a wonderful poem. I shall read that to Mako and see what he thinks too. He is such an amazing little guy, but I might be a bit biased hehe. Bolin and Korra have been so good with them, Bolin while he is so caring with him hasn't really shocked me. It's the turn around in Korra, she used to pounce on him, scruff him, hiss at him, she was a bit of a b*+@# in all honesty. Now she cuddles up with him, takes him food, plays gently with him and even cleans his ears. Okay so he'd prefer she didn't do that last one...
Marcia, the things we do for our furry babies eh? There really is no limit.
This morning when I got up and went to see to them there was some watery brown stool on the puppy pad. Figured it was highly unlikely to be Mako's as it was on the pad. Unfortunately had to be out most of the day, when I got home there were 3 more light brown stools with a bit of a bubbly appearence. I've seperated all three off in the hopes of finding the culprit. Again don't think it's Mako as he is pretty clean and these are very messy poos. I'm thinking it's Bolin as I don't think Korra could produce so much and still be so active, but Bolin is a big boy with a lot of reserves. All three are acting find, gums are nice. Keeping a close eye on them tonight. If there is any more I will take a sample and all three to the vets tomorrow. Can't risk Mako picking something up with surgery on Wednesday.
On the up side he's not as sore today, nice pink looking, nice and flat.
As always, thanks for reading and your support, advice and wisdom. It means the world to Mako, Bolin, Korra, my OH and I.

Checked on them during the night and saw a 1 loose stool on the puppy pad and Bolin walking back to bed. Korra was asleep in the same position as when I last checked and erm.. Mako was with me.. we were having cuddles in my bed hehe. So I checked Bolin again, gums fine, tented his scruff and it didn't snap back straight away but it was pretty good still. I mixed about 2ml of salmon oil with 20 ml of water and syringe fed him it, he took it willing from the syringe but no interest from the bowl. Did the same early this morning and again about 1 1/2 ago. I don't want to give him too much but I'm not forcing him, just holding him and very slowly squeezing the syringe when he licks. He seems nicely hydrated now so I'll check him every time I check Mako and give the vets a call this afternoon just to give them a heads up in case it's contagious and Mako gets it.
Mako and Korra seem fine at the moment though and all the other stools were nice and firm, just one slightly loose one this morning, assuming it's Bolins and he's on the mend.

Bolin seems fine today, no more loose stools in the cage and caught him going in the wrong corner during playtime and it was a normal bone in poo.
Trouble getting Mako to pass urine today. It's my own fault as I bandaged him up just before dinner and was so happy that the bandage was staying on and that it would prevent him from getting infected that I left it until after tea to check him, so about 8 hours. Often he goes 12 hours without needing expressing, but usually every 8 hours. Guess he had a lot to drink today as he was very full, his penis was really swollen and looked like it had spent the last 8 hours on speed healing, so much so I couldn't see the 'hole'. I managed to get him to pass some droplets and will be checking him every couple of hours and trying to get bits out to encourage the hole to stay open. I did call the vets and they said if I can't get anything out at all then to take him in and they would empty him with a needle, but since he's passed a bit they think he will be fine until morning and they will try fit him in for surgery tomorrow. I'm to take him on before 10am.

maybe you ask some people at the show with disable ferrets how they treat Mako's problem as well. I hope his wheels help.
