I have been skinning and gutting asf rats for my ferrets. I usually cut tail off and female and male genitalia. The main reason for this it is easier than to go digging for a pee bladder. For those who gut rats do u do the same? I skin them because I rinse them off, and think wet fur would be a turn off for the ferrets. I hope there are no diseases i can get. (lol) I am sick of skinning rats

The fur can be good for them to eat. I rary find leftovers when feeding mice or hatchlings.
Save the trouble and toss it in whole.

My rats come in at the end of this week, I can't wait. I have not fed them any yet and I hope they like them (cavies too) but I planned on maybe putting a little slice in them at first to show the meat and then just putting the whole thing in like it is. The end goal being to not have to put any cuts in them. Rinse defrost and feed!

I guess if they look good on the outside i will quit rinsing the rats. so far the ones from Hare Today have looked good as well as the cavies. The pooh in them cavies is pretty bad. I skin them, too, One person said the fur on the cavies was too long for his ferrets taste, then someone else said he just gave it to them like it was,and there was nothing left
Mine did not go for the rats nor cavies at first. I almost quit offering it to them. I would hold pieces of it and daub their mouths with it . You know how finicky they can be. It finally paid off. Still having difficulty with them eating mice .

My girls refuse to eat guinea pigs with the fur on. They do fine with asf's though. If you are cutting the tails off, make sure you give them to the ferrets. They have a good amount of fat in them.

I gut rats but I never skin them any more than I do the mice (mice they get whole, just cut in half. I always feed tails (attached of course). Heads, feet and tails are always eaten first. Genetalia are always left intact as well. The only thing I remove are bladders, stomach and intestines (these are removed because I hate ferret decorating). I do skin guinea pigs and rabbits (though my next batch of kits are going to learn how to deal with rabbit with their jackets on) ciao

They didn't have mom to teach them, so it takes a little while to figure things out.

Yeah, mine have just started doing that sometimes with the asf's. Mine eat the ASF fur and all. There is nothing that they do not eat with the ASF. (sometimes they leave the tail) On the Gp Unless there is a lot of poop they eat that too. sometimes there is poop all over the cage. I think that happens when 2 of them decide to fight over it and have GP tug o war. But for the most part there is nothing left. Even with my whole prey chicken and quail. only thing ever left is quail feet.

Yeah, the just recently started leaving some of the coat / skin behind. They've never done that before. It was a pretty large asf though.

When my ferrets eat mice, rats or chicks everything is eaten. With guinea pigs they eat all the meat and innards only leaving the fur and head intact. Mine eat the guinea pig feet first then everything inside from the bum up. They left majority of the skin still attached to the head and there was no mess. If given chicken carcasses I rarely find anything left but tiny bit of breast bone
