Hi, I'm picking up my big boy tomorrow from the rescue, and im wondering if there's any tips on how to get them properly settled in? The journey is roughly an hour with good traffic. How many days should I leave him alone to settle in? Should I let him out to play when he gets home, or should I just put him in his cage? He's really quite grubby underneath, I do think he needs a bath, maybe just a water bath, but how long should I wait until giving him a bath? What are some tips to get him used to me? Thanks

The answer can vary based on personality. I'd ask the rescue to bathe him. If he seems hesitant, cage time to get use to the smells and sounds. If he is hyper, then let him explore. Let him be your guide.

You're going to have so much fun with him. Ferrets in a new place are all about exploring. You want to build your bond with him and he needs to find some safe places. I would let him explore in one room first. Will you have his cage in your room? Or is he outside? Are you bringing home Ted or Bill? Let them say goodbye to each other.
If his cage is in your room, I would take him in there and show him his cage. Make sure that he knows where his food and water is. Cover the ramp up into the cage, so his little feet don't get caught and he can come and go. Close your door and sit on the floor with him. You can dangle some socks or wiggle a blanket to invite him to play. Or you can carry him around some and show him everything and let him down to see things on his own. Talk to him and you can even follow him around.
He may be nervous and stressed. You can reassure him and he may even need you to get up in the middle of the night and talk to him and let him know you are there.
Ferrets take some time to decide to give their friendship and love. They aren't like puppies who instantly love you. They're smart and once they decide they like/love you, it's forever.
Have fun and we would all love to see some pictures. :wave2:

Congratulations on getting your wee boy. I always give settling in times to my newbies. At first it's just quiet cage time...depending on reactions then they're allowed to roam around in a couple of days. I've got different sections in my house that is to accommodate different play groups so at first they're only allowed to play in the ferret room itself. It's quiet and away from the bustle of the house. The noises are softer down there. They can get used to the different smells and meet a few of the occupants through the cage bars. I also lock off their access to the outdoor play area so that they don't spook and refuse to come inside. ciao

Thanks guys! His cage is outside, but of course he has a room to play in inside
Should I just sit with him and play with a few toys with him on the first day?

Just turn him loose in house and see what he does. Follow him around and talk to him as he explores. It is going to be alright. Most are very happy to be out in open spaces after being caged up.
