My little Simon is 3 months old and I just got him a few days ago. He does this weird head bobbing like he's trying to smell something. But it's like he doesn't really care about supporting his head as much. And he likes when I support his head for him. Is this head bobbing normal?

Can you catch a video of him doing that? Most ferrets will bob their heads back and forth while eating, but I haven't seen that behavior in any of mine when they are not eating. I'll tag Heather and nancyl who are both breeders.

I would like to see a video if at all possible. There are some possible issues but without really seeing it I certainly wouldn't want to try and guess. The inability for a kit to hold up their head would be serious issue, especially at 3 months of age ciao

I'd want to see a video also. It's not normal and I'd be calling the vet.

His ears do smell. And I planned on cleaning them today. I will try to catch him doing it today as soon as I get home.

Go to a vet and let them check it out--I read where a cat was permanently damaged--it been a while back, since i read this, and i cant remember the details. So i am sure that it can happen to a ferret as well. U don't need to go to an exotic vet for this kind of check.
I am treating all of mine right now , baby brought home ear mites. They r very contagious. Vet gave me revolution. Will have to treat them again in two weeks.

If his ears smell it certainly sounds like mites try using a small ball of cotton wool with a little warm olive oil on and wipe the outer ear ( don't use a cotton bud or delve deep ) if you can see what looks like dirt on the white cotton ball your baby has mites ( that's mite faeces) get him to a vet asp good luck take care bye for now Bev

You know....I'd like to have him checked out by the vet. If the mite infestation is extreme enough or if he has an inner ear infection that is contributing to this behaviour then it needs to be treated ASAP. The vet could also rule out any other possible issues as well. ciao

As others have said, I'd actually just go straight to a vet w/o cleaning as then they can get a clean swab to test & then do the cleaning for you even. My vet actually tested Rolo for ear mites for free when I brought him in for his initial checkup right after I bought him, so I imagine its likely an inexpensive test.
